best place to find animal bones and crush pennies
several years ago i stumbled upon the sleepy town of port costa, which is just to the north of crockett (the town just across the bridge from vallejo, where the C&H cane sugar factory is). the town sits on the carquinez strait, the body of water that empties the sacramento delta into the bay. in addition to visiting the cool places in town, it's fun to walk along the water. the hillsides are pretty and there are interesting industrial sites to see along the way. trains go by pretty frequently so you can crush pennies on the tracks and wave to the conductors. gotta be careful though, or you could end up like the animals we saw on our walk, which leads to "the best place to find animal bones" part of the review. carry a couple of plastic bags on this walk - we saw at least two nearly full deer skeletons, one of which had a perfect skull which i really wanted to keep, but i didn't have any way to carry it.
if you wander east far enough, you will end up in the old part of martinez, which has several places to eat. if you head in the other direction, you will reach crockett and the C&H cane sugar factory (a much shorter walk). it's pretty neat to look at the sugar factory, i took a lot of cool b&w photos there. if you're up for a longer walk, you could go from crockett all the way to martinez, but you might want a car shuttle for this.
