ahhh. the redwoods
You walk into the woods, and the air becomes still, the smells and sounds subdued. this is a great place to take kids for a walk in the woods as it's not too far off the beaten path. there is also a "braille path" for sight impaired folks. - michelle , posted 10/12/04

Awesome Redwood Park
Located off of River Road in Guerneville (just a few miles northwest of Santa Rosa), this park features a magnificent grove of ancient redwoods. You can either take the easy nature trail, or try one of the more challenging hikes through redwoods, chaparral, and oak tree woodlands. Excellent camping is also available at the State Park up at Bull Frog pond. For more info: www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp - Bret , posted 10/07/04

Hike among the big trees in Guernville
Armstrong Woods state park just outside Guernville is a hidden treasure. Miles of hiking trails among giant redwood trees, An annotated nature trail for kids (and those at heart), extensive picknicking/BBQ areas, even camping! This is a true gem near the Russian River. - Stephen , posted 10/06/04

old growth redwoods
this is a great place for a picnic and/or a hike. You can park in the free parking lot and walk into the picnic area or pay five dollars and drive in. The old growth section has beautiful wide trails. It even has a flat section that is a "braille trail" for sight-impaired folks. If you park outside, there is a trail adjacent to the parking lot called the East Ridge trail. It is a vigorous, rolling all uphill trail. There is an intersection about 1 mile up that gives you the option of continuing up into Bullfrog Pond and Austin Creek or you can turn left and go to the picnic area. From there, you can take the flat section back to your car. A third option is to follow the signs to Bullfrog Pond but turn towards Gilliam Creek when you reach the summit. From there, you can take Pool Ridge trail back to the picnic area or Armstrong tree. - karen , posted 10/15/04
