The Best Alternative To Ownership
Owning a car in an urban setting isn't terribly practical. In fact, it's debatable whether owning a car is responsible given the very large footprint on the environment it imposes. But let's face it. Public transportation is neither reliable nor convenient and many people just aren't able to walk or ride a bike everywhere. If you do own a car, by the time you pay for higher insurance, gas, finance payments, parking tickets, parking space, meters, repairs, maintenance and the occasional smashed window and loss of valuables, the high price adds up quickly. But you can make a smarter investment of your time, money and the environment.

After much suffering at the hands of public transportation, I decided to try Zipcar. And oh am I glad that I did. It's convenient and cheap. As of May 07 the basic plan is $8.75/hr and $65/day - unlike most other carsharing programs there's no deposts - and discounts are available, and that includes 125 miles, insurance and....drum roll please...gas. Yep, there's a gas card on the visor.

You can easily pickup a vehicle with reservations on the website 24/7 and you're off and running to enjoy your time on your own schedule instead of the pickup and drop off restrictions set by a rental agency. Besides, by the time you add up all the extra charges for a rental, or ownership, a ZipCar definitely costs far less. You get the convenience of a car without having to own one, or the guilt, and we're all one step closer to using less fossil fuels. All the cars are brand new and they also have hybrids available.

And, Oh yeah! ZipCar is currently available in Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Washington, DC, London, and expanding soon to Vancouver. So if you take a trip to any of these cities, you can use your ZipCar account.

Try it. It's awesome.
