I agree, when I first saw the change in format I didn' like it right away. But I've given it chance and I'm still not adjusted fully. Don't think I ever will be. I used Tribe because it had intuitive GUI. As much as trolls like to say "deal with it, it's FREE", Tribe's business model (like all the other "FREE" sites) is to mine our preferences, posts and keywords to create marketing and product plans. We're providing demographic data, and anyone who thinks that's "FREE" will fail Business 101. In any case, the exchange is no longer valuable for me, and Tribe can eat it. or are they ignoring what is essentially a unanimous request to get rid of this format. In the weeks leading up to the new TOU and format change there was a lot of talk about wanting feedback, but the feedback given was summarily ignored. The CEO claims to want to make the regs happy; Wade, the public face of the new regime tells people to essentially get used to it, and I have yet to hear any one single person say that they like the way things are going. There's less participation around here, it's almost ghost-townie, people are leaving in droves, and there's a new complaint about how things are going almost every 15 seconds. What's being done about this? So far, I haven't seen anything. So whatcha gonna do folks? You're quickly running out of options. LOL, I joined tribe about 2 weeks before the change to the new format because I was told there was less censorship. I was told it was better than myspace. From what I have seen, Myspace is much more customizeable, and with a bit of coding, the censorship can be over-ridden in some cases....I even have the fact I am Polyamorous on my detail section. I am very disappointed in Tribe. It is too bad, because had Tribe stayed the way it was, I might have considered using it more than myspace....now, as I see many others with the same sentiment, I too rarely come onto tribe. Massive censorship and now this?! The new Tribe look bites! But I've spent so much time (and made great friends) here, it'll be hard to leave...but I'm considering it. Too much white background. The inability to see all of your info (all of your tribes for example) on one page. No navigation bar to see/go where you just were on Tribe. But the entire "look" is terrible. When you click on a Tribe it looks like crap. I used to recommend this site a lot, but you can be sure that won't be happening any longer. I sincerely hope the Tribe "leaders" see these posts and will act accordingly...return to sender! We want the old tribe back! I can understand a desire to change tribe, to make navigation clearer and more intuitive. There are industry specialists who even have psychology degrees who specialize in making websites and directories easier to use and clearer. I really hope that tribe didn't actually pay such a consultant or firm with such a specialty to advise these changes. Because if they did, they should consider the reaction they are getting to these changes as basis for a lawsuit. Evidence is that if you want a range of people from Boomers, to Gen Xer's, to the current bunch of over eighteens... that you don't give people sterile corperate image. You give them pop culture icons which give them a softer spot. For instance the way the google graphic changes around their logo... something creative and quirky, fun. If I could for instance tune into tribe and see a funny scene with Ren and Stimpy around the tribe logo on day, something with I dunno... having to do with beauty and the geek the following day, or making a cheeky reference in the logo to a celebrity scandal of some kind....but the old format, it would actually probably create a bigger draw than all of these interface changes. - Bruecke Bautraeger , posted 01/28/06 |

I really don't understand why people have clicked 5 stars, then ripped it. I wish there was a way to have NO STARS. This sucks. from the high contrast, migraine causing new look, to the simple fact that I can't get to my messages from a photo page (like we used to be able to). It's just poor design and layout. Shit, even Yahoo 360 is still in Beta form AFTER ALMOST 2 YEARS, not 2 weeks like Tribe did. All of this could've been taken care of quickly, efficiently, and painlessly. It's not that hard to change the background color. the links may take a few more hours, but not many, AND YOUR RESPONSE COULD HAVE BEEN. PERIOD. No response to an outcry of this magnitude, by your own members? What the fuck are we to you people? Stop blowing fucking smoke up my ass and come clean already. Do you want us to stay or get the hell out now? Because all signs point to go, and I've already started moving, and have gotten 12 other people to start moving or move already too. It takes me up to 3 clicks to get to where I would get with a click or sometimes even without a click – right from "my page". The colors hurt my eyes. And what is the "Tribes-Members-Places-Listings" doing at the most prominent "real estate". How many members need to be explained what "listings" are? Or why do I ever need to go to a page that lists 3 people that I am connected with (out of thousands) and 10 or so people that I don't know (The Members button). Such prominent real estate should be given to functions that are used more often, for example tabs to the USER'S Tribes or friends or listings. Who cares about those generic/sample ones? BTW. seems like we all got confused on what the star rating means. Do we rate this idea or do we rate new Tribe? It is incredibly difficult to navigate this site now. I loved that bar at the top where you could see where you were and just click back to whatever page you wanted. I don't understand what prompted you all to change anything in the first place - information isn't as readily available, usability stinks, and the look is childish. Not only did we not get a choice about the new TRIBE look, but we don't even get a choice about giving them a zero. They do get at least one star for all of us telling them that SUCK!. So even there system for statistics is rigged just like thier censorship and the rest of the bullshit. OK Members it's up to us to get a new communication system going. Fuck the zealots and the bible thumpers who try constantly mandate morality and the TRIBE let them do that. TRIBE is now just ordinary and that's not what i want I don't want ordinary, never have and that's why I came here in the first place because it was exciting and had many places and people you could meet that would open your eyes to all kinds of great and fascinating ideas, it was that , but it is no longer. Look - this was supposed to be an improvement and it just plain isn't. When UI, and IP guys with YEARS of experience start sending Wade PMs about how ridiculous the new setup is, YOU MUST REALIZE SOMETHING IS WRONG. My mouse is going to burst into flames if I come to this site as often as I like to because I have to navigate twice as much to get to where I want to be. Everything we ever worked for on this has been taken over by yet another conservative who didn't like it. So just because you don't like it we have to suffer the consequences? This is impossible to navigate, and everything good about it has been sucked dry. ok, I'm not much of a complainer, but the old design had a really elegant simplicity to it which I miss. There were nice simple clean lines, subtle depths and fields. this new design lacks that. it is unfocused and harder to use. I like the attempt at a new visual look for tribe. However the colors are plain (red on grey?). The don't provide any contrast thus the pages don't "pop". Instead they sit there looking rather dull. Add to that the architecture of the pages are absolute shite. It took me 5-10 minutes to figure out how to get to my home page alone. I was tempted to sign out and forget about it all together. (I am permently signed in on my home computer.) I really like the way in which you have built a community here. It's 10 times better than myspace within layout and everything (in your past version). Who did they sample with their "extensive research" Mental patients? They are probably used to white walls and blaring insanity. This new format is not easy to navigate, the stuff I like isn't right at my finger tips, it looks like poo (well actually brown would be an improvement) it's not cool anymore and it's not fun. I used to be a tribe junky, but now I don't even feel like logging on. All that money that is being wasted by advertisers isn't doing any good if people don't like the page they are viewing, we won't stay long enough to click through any of the adds, and isn't that the reason those ads are there? Tribe used to be the best thing since powdered toast, I actually would go off on rants to friends about how cool it was. Then the "Changes" started happening. It seems to only get worse, each and everytime you all mess with something, Wade. Is your main advisor in all of this, in all actuality your arch-nemesis helping you to bring about your own doom? Are you bitter about something? Do you need a hug? All of these changes aren't in the best interest of your company(and I'm a big fosterer of good change, deario) . You know the old mottos of business, right? "The customer will tell you exactly what they want, all you have to do is listen." "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Well, you aren't listening and you broke it. Howz about switching that around before you go belly up? Or would you prefer to appear in Wired and other mags, a year from now in an article titled: "How to ruin your online business in less than a year." Please revert to the old Version!! Aside from the silly candied look for the new version, I am finding it much harder to navigate. and it now takes me several clikcs to arrive at what was once just there. Examples inlcude not being able to see all my tribes and which ones have new postings. When I get to the tribe itself, I see all messages cluttered together, instead of posts and listing and events being separated, which now requires additional clicks. What a confusing pain in the ass! Improvments are supposed to make things easier. How about a better search engine to find people? I am all for improvements in funcitonality, but this feels like a major step backwards in the Evolution of Tribe. It is a shame..... There once were these creative folks who were invited into a quirky salon. They were elated to find that it was not "packaged" for them, but rather had its own unique style, a personality even. I am WAY more disconnected from my friends than I ever was with the new scheme. I no longer have degrees of separation links to listings at the top of my page, and I no longer have all my friends blogs summarized in one easy to get to area. Some of my friends post long-ass blogs, and to have to scroll past theirs to see what others have written is a pain in the ASS not to mention my tired fingers. I could care less about the color and "look and feel" aspect - the issues that have my wand in a knot are those relating to functionality and the fact that so much of what I loved about the site has been removed from my control, and no options for workarounds have been presented. An ill-thought, poorly executed overhaul that was done completely without ANY of our input as to what we'd like to see. but i actually like the new colour scheme... this new reddish colour is much better than that tacky ass hot pink they used to have. i don't think i've seen anything so insignificant create such a violent reaction since clear pepsi. maybe i'm missing something here, but as far as i can tell, the new design has the following features: bad colors, really bad icons (apologies to the illustrator but it looks like 1999 to me), WAY BETTER organization, way less enseless clutter, and a much easier platform from which to make updates and (fingers crossed) customization options. i don't know if tribe is interested in those things, but it does seem that they would be much easier to implement now. i think what has happened here is that everyone got used to tribe's really awful design a long time ago (again, apologies to those involved but tribe's design has consistently kinda sucked), and now that they've taken some baby steps forward (and maybe one or two back), everyone's kvetching like they sold it for a dollar to microsoft. normally i wouldn't bother with this, and i'm probably going to piss some folks off, but WHO GIVES A FUCK??? there are real issues to worry about here, like the role of censorship in virtual communities. the respective roles, rights, and responsibilities of those who run these communities, and of those who populate them. how the organization behind a community like this can keep money coming into it so it doesn't crumble, leaving all of us with *no tribe at all*. et cetera. we could be discussing these things, but instead we're talking about "i'm going back to friendster (which i think we all agree sucks way worse)" or "fuck this, see you on myspace (*actually* owned by rupert murdoch)". so there, i threw my hat in. i *highly* suggest that everyone here who is unhappy go here: tribes.tribe.net/newlook and say something about it. but for fucks sake, be an adult about it. - jk , posted 01/22/06 |

Wade, Tribe was different because it appealed to a pretty special bunch of people. The ones who wanted to get away from friendster and all those other "Wonderbread" type online communities. Now we are confronted with cencorship and "flag this photo for removal" buttons. We're not going in the right direction here. Tribe is the only online community I'm willing to put up with. Keep it real - I thought it's called TRIBE for a reason. I'm all for trying to stay away from the corporate image. No need to change GUI's every few months. So someone creates a great online networking tool. It's simple and effective and non commercial and not censored and allows for a great deal of individual creative user customization. Then when it becomes a huge popular success with the artistic and spiritually conscious community they add ads, censor what can be said, and then seriously limit the creative capabilities. This new tribe format is so crufty and clumsy. One thing I liked about tribe in the beginning was how elegant it was. Pages loaded quickly and everything was straightforward and clean. Now it's just clunky. The new design buffer around the edge is childish and ugly. It looks like it was designed for a happy meal --like it was dumbed down for people who can barely read --not to mention that it's just ugly. Also, everything takes twice as long to load, and it seems like whenever I make a change to something it doesn't take the first time --it takes several tries. My question is: Why did you have to ruin a good thing? What was once elegant and fast is now clunky and slow. The posting list on the home page is cluttered, and the design elements are slow, ugly and look like a cereal box. What happened to tribe.net's elegant structure? Which one of you are responsible for turning it into an overweight, mediocre, clumsy monster? Who decided to put that beautiful, swift, svelt tribe I once knew into a fat suit? Tribe had a nice, clean uncluttered and simple interface. Now it doesn't. Here's why: the number of clicks for getting anywhere has increased, which I understand is great if you want to place more ads but not so great for usability. Too many elements per page, it's just too cluttered. Finding the tiny link to my home page proved to be a bit of a challenge. So now not only do you have to click more, but also you need to wade (pun intended) among all the page clutter to get where you want to go. Aesthetics. The formerly clean and, dare I say it, even elegant look has gone all Disneyland. This is a more subjective judgment, but that's my 2c. One good thing came out of the redesign. Well, the people behind tribe.net did their best and for that, you certainly must praise them. It isn't easy to build new things and always a surprise to see how they work eventually. But I think the new layout isn't user friendly at all and I'm not into 'nice new lay outs' if they don't work. It's not that I'm not willing or not able to learn new things, but I think things always have to be practical and user friendly, especially when it involves internet pages. I had no idea that I would ever feel that tribe had gone so far downhill 'til now! The ads I could tolerate, the TOU change, not too challenging, but the "just viewed" feature being taken away, the member names removed from pix when viewing a tribe page & postings, and the overall new look and navigation scheme really turns me off! I'm amazed at how irritated I am, as well as others. I'm actually shocked and dismayed. This has been a fine system with many excellent features. I wasn't having problems with using this service for the past couple of years, but now am seeking new options. I'm truly surprised at this development! 5 stars for returning to the previous format. I won't be recommending any new folks to join Tribe with this so called "upgrade". There are way too many bugs, and the overall design is just horrifying. The best thing about the changes is, that there's still no charge for people to participate - which is no change at all! It really wasn't broken, I'm absolutely flabbergasted! Perhaps the most telling experiement would be to allow users to choose their own format, old or new - then the folks who are managing this would actually have clarity by folks voting with their direct choice of usage, rather than guessing, formulaic projections, or potentially skewed 'focus groups'. I'm not so down on the look- it's juvenile to say the least, and naive from a professional design standpoint, but whatever. It's the buggy functionality and lack of intuitive interface that gets me. Yes, it takes some time to get used to change, but the number one rule in designing an interface is DON'T MAKE THEM THINK. Overall, I don't mind the design. I think the navigation is much better, actually. I have to say that I'm not really fond of the "bubble" icons across the top. Real estatte is still precious, and pictures take time - so a text option for would be nice. One other thing... If it's "My Homepage" why can't I customize it? I'd really like to be able to filter out certain posts, or see only blog posts, or view only certain friends... Also, I'd like to be able to select an option that allows me to show all of the tribes, not just a handful. Or, maybe some people will want to see friend icons there... Get over it! What is so f**ken wrong with this one? You're being crybabies that just can't adjust to change! This one is so much better, in terms of the multiple functions that one can do right on one page, easy to read and uncramped layout at each site, all-around ease of use, and seamless layout throughout! It's a definite improvement, and none of you have forwarded any rational points for why it's not better than the old format, or put forth a solid rationale about how to make it better! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. True, it's "prettier" and a bit more "stylin"; however it has become less user friendly than before. And for the love of Cthulu with Ribbons On His Tentacles --- will SOMEBODY ditch the white/red eye glaring color scheme and go back to the orange/gray! At least Myspace as it right with their soothing blues. Ten minutes into reading posts and I've got a headache. But what truly chaps my hide is how after beta testing this for 2 weeks with only a 40% approval rating -- they implement it anyway. That's beyond stupidity and arrogance. That's BAD BUSINESS. it reminds me of friendster-and why are the boxes for writing blog posts and other posts so damned small? its so not user friendly and poorly done. did I vote on this? it really doesn't look like anything. The orange reminds me of EasyCar in the UK. And I hate how I can't see all my tribes at once like I used to. I also wish I could still see how many views I had on my profile since today. I miss being able to separate my friends' blogs from the listings 3 degrees away. There was nothing wrong with the old Tribe.
