Kids these days don't know what real music is! They listen to all that whiney emo shit. These guys are an awesome change of pace if you're ready to put down the razor blade and sing out loud instead of holding it all in until your poor little heart explodes. Plus they are all super rad guys <3 Hopefully I catch ya'll again soon! - Ashlee , posted 04/17/07 |

I bit Tobias on the ribs really hard when we were very young. he told me the scar only went away recently. I think it was MY biting him that imbued him with his unique style. that's right. my teeth made him rock. But seriously. Tobias is an outstanding vocalist, and the band is the perfect weapon for one with global ambitions like Toby. He could have easily invented a new source of light, or designed weapons for the NSA. luckily for us he decided to rock out. Love you Tobias. Piero - Unsubscribed , posted 02/05/07 |

Heard them two years ago at a house party and was thoroughly impressed; heard them at Slim's last Friday and they're still wonderful. - Marianimal , posted 11/20/06 |

not only do these guys kick ass in person, but the music they make is off the wall. the first track on their new EP can make you want to dance...and then there are others for different moods, such as Katy. I say over all these guys are a great band and have dont need much more improving..they are well worthy of radio exposure and label signing! rock on guys, you are the best :D --jenn - jenn , posted 01/04/05 |

You can hear what it means to be a genuine rock band with TGE. The range carried in the vocals and cohesive melody of all the instruments is awesome! Our "real" music scene in San Francisco has been lacking and i'm happy that you haven't forgotten what it means to ROCK!! If it Feels Like A Kiss now I can't wait for later! ps. The acoustic of Katy is my favorite! - Misc , posted 12/22/04 |

This band is PRO. Pro gear, Pro Sound - absolutely pro. We had a fantastic time and closing out the set with a little taste of Nirvana was orgasmic. - Unsubscribed , posted 12/20/04 |

I have felt jaded about music, especially local SF live music; however, there is a strong possibility that these guys might restore my faith in rock: No small achievement. I can't wait for the album to come out! - Brian , posted 12/10/04 |

OK...so this isn't really a review..just an acronym adjustment. For those of you wanting to impress friends and strangers alike with your knowledge of escort terminology, the correct way to acronymize The Girlfriend Experience is GFE...or the GFE...or The GFE. - Hegemon , posted 12/03/04 |

I saw TGE at the Cherry Lounge in SF a few weeks ago and was blown away by the giant wave of sound that poured out of these guys... it was that moving. Thier sound is a dark, haunting, heavy, poetic, rhythmic gush... like a dam breaking right in front of you. I highly recommend going to see them. -Brian - Brian , posted 11/18/04 |

If, in an emergency, you know you could sever one of your own limbs and eat it in order to survive, then you might be ready for this freakshow which pays homage to your deepest desire to get 50 feet tall and take a loving crap on Pat Boone. Earplugs are completely ineffective. Wear adult diapers and hurricane attire. - Steve , posted 11/16/04 |

Amazing talent and emotionally charged music. I danced my ass off at their show. I am in awe at how beautifully seductive their style is. Truly inspiring. - maggie , posted 11/16/04 |

Saw them at Kimo's and they totally rocked the joint. Everyone was on and they sounded amazing. It was the first time I had seen them but I'm definitely a fan and will see them whenever I can. Great band, great atmosphere and just a great time. Everyone should see them before they die! - Aram , posted 11/16/04 |

...is this kind of stuff. I fell in love with rock when I was a kid and spread my wings:Jazz, Classical, Fusion, as well as the dreaded prog. When all is said and done you realize it's time to cut the crap and come home to what made you fall in love in the first place. The Girlfriend Experience writes and performs pop, that obviously is more aggressive than what you fell for, but the other attributes are intact. Punchy singing and playing from a bunch of cute guys. (Well SOMEBODY probably thinks so.) If you want a combination of savvy and taste (not in excess) look no further. - Mark , posted 11/09/04 |

OK, you KNOW how many times your friend or a friend of a friend DRAGS you out to hear their band, promising you'll LOVE them and they're so amazing?? Been there a hundred times, right? And once again it's fuck me I can believe I am sitting through one more shitty set of mediocre (and that's on a good night) music trying not to be rude and tell this band to get the fuck off the stage....it's enough to make you stay home...which is what a lot of people have been doing over the past few years in the bay area...not going out and supporting local music because frankly, there hasn't been much to get excited about... Well gues what...there's a reason to get your ass out of the house and stop lamenting over the recent fortification of the reign of King George....they're called The Girlfriend Experience. Guys who have played in many other bands who have finally come together to form the best local band to hit the bay area in twenty years....and I don't make statements like that! These guys have it...that thing you hear for the first time and go oh my god what was that...who was that?? I saw them a few weeks ago at the Cherry Bar in San Francisco. Not knowing quite what they'd sound like live (I had heard only a rough demo cd) I kept my expectations at a reasonable mid to low level and was THRILLED when they completely took over everyone in the room...one note at a time. Tobias Hawkins is without a doubt the best vocalist to come along since Chris Cornell. He screams and you melt into oblivion...it's the beautiful, lost in it, don't wake me I'm dreaming kind of music...you're just there, with it, completely sucked in and satisfied.... All I could say to myself after their set was thank god. Thank god it's still out there....thank god I haven't completely lost it and become so jaded that I'll never be able to hear something so fresh and thrilling that it moves me into a state of bliss! Remember that?? Remember hearing a band for the first time that just wrecks you in the best possible way? Go out and find them...wherever they're playing and prepare yourself to be taken. You won't want to come back. - Mary , posted 11/07/04 |

I downloaded and put these tunes onto a CD that has been in our car CD Player for 2 months!! This music is catchy and contageous with an edge that will keep you on the edge of your seat wanting and waiting to find out what will happen next! - Jonny , posted 11/01/04 |

These are the attributes I've noticed most about this band in both their recordings and live shows. Their strong interaction belies the fact that they've only been working together for a little more than a year - they play like a much more seasoned band. Strong songwriting, both lyrical and aggressive, prevails in songs that feature the unique talent of the individual members. - saline , posted 10/27/04 |

Even though we don't really have much of a choice this year (again) for our supreme political leader, we do have the freedom to rock in this country to the behemoth of audible grandeur that is The Girlfriend Experience! Indeed, they are what the Founding Fathers meant by "separation of Powers." With the Separate, but Equal Powers of Ty C. Gerhardt on guitars (undoubtedly the Thomas Jefferson of the group), vocalist and showman par excellence Tobias Hawkins III (who really IS qualified to lead this Super Power), and the thundering rhythm apparatus -- in the true spirit of bipartisanship -- that is James Maze on bass and Jeff Left on drums. The American Sonic Revolution has begun -- thank God! From now on there will be only traitors and The Girlfriend Experience. Be sure you are on the right side of history.... - den , posted 10/27/04 |

This band is tight! The vocals/lyrics by frontman Tobias Hawkins will kick your ass. With that sultry velvety voice your bound to get sucked in everytime. The Girlfriend Experience is on their way to the top. Blends of Radiohead, Tool, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy, Janes Addiction, Soundgarden/Chris Cornell but no it's The Girlfriend Experience with an amazingly talented band to back a frontman that can and will blow you away. Oh I forgot...not many vocalists can scream well. Tobias can scream so well it will make you cry. My best advice to you is to CATCH THEM IF YOU CAN...or better yet WHILE YOU CAN. - 2unesgrl , posted 10/23/04 |

An interesting thing happened on the drive home the other day. I was in stop and go traffic, getting ready to scream, so I did what any good little commuter would do, I turned on the radio. After about 2 or 3 minutes I was wondering who was playing on the radio. I thought to my self this band is really, really good. I then realized that it was not the radio at all but a demo CD of the band “The Girlfriend Experience”. I do not want to be cliché but this band ROCKS!!! “The Girlfriend Experience” is reminiscent of “Bauhaus”, “Radiohead” and well “The Doors”. Yes, I know an eclectic mix. Now I hate to compare bands because that just states there is no originality to them. On the contrary, “The Girlfriend Experience” is original in their intent. This band is well…music you can “sink your teeth into”. There is substance and layers that scream, “listen to me over and over and over!” This band has great potential and I cannot wait for their released CD! - Mike , posted 10/22/04 |

i listend to one of their songs just yesterday, the one about the Dead Elephant, and while i'm by no means a musicphile, to my casual interest ears i thought it was great. definitly the sort of thing i would hear and wonder when their next tour is and how many millions of records they've sold. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/22/04 |

I saw these guys at Kimo's a while ago - UNBELIEVABLE. Tobias Hawkins (singer) puts on a great show and has a fantastic voice. The band rocks with their own brand of psychedelic-tinged stoner pop (or something). I expect they'll go far . . . check 'em out if you get the chance. - Ed Phobes , posted 10/22/04 |

Band of experienced alt & punk rockers showcasing excellent individual talent and a batch of melodically evocative tunes. Hard, noisy pop with An intense and satisfying musical delivery - they have a great appreciation of their roots, but you won't see them wearing them TOO clearly. The GirlFriendExperience has its own thing going. Frontman Tobias hawkins cast a good spell, and Guitar Ty G plays impressively. The drum and sexy bass are just f*cking TIGHT-->solid ROCK'n'ROLL that keeps it all going all night. Watch the drummer's chicken decapitation finale! - IT'S NOT TO BE MISSED!!! ...and THEY SOUND GREAT! - J , posted 10/20/04 |

The drummer is from SF, and they play here a lot, so we get to claim them too! Go see them in any city and they will not disappoint. I am one hard-to-please bitch, so if I like them, they must be GREAT!!! Great songs, great performances, great vibe, and a lunatic singer---they've got it all. - Lorrain , posted 10/20/04 |

The Girlfriend Experience features Tobias Hawkins III on vocals (Counting Crows, Laundry, Sling Shot Venus, Vanessa Lowe), Ty C. Gerhardt on guitar (Madness of Dean, ing, Taikonaut), James Maze on bass (Superlarry, Spore Attic) and Jeff Left on drums (This Device). They are talented musicians with a unique sound.
