lov' it
I am not a big fan of club but I really liked this place,
never been there for the 84 party though, i go there mainly in WE
friendly crowd, no "check me out" vibe, I always feel comfortable there
and I like that you can hear non-electro music (I love electro but from time to time it is nice to hear the Smiths on a Saturday nght) in the front room
is it close for good?...ooops, so it did not close, I hought I heard that, oh well then I will have to go back then - Virginie , posted 01/19/06

Only place to get your 80's fix
I try to get down to the Cat Club as much as possible on Thursday nights for 1984. I can just dance the night away and not think of anything else. They should put some AC in the front room though. I just move to the groove of the back room when I need to rest and cool off. - john , posted 05/03/05

sure it's steamy, but that's half the fun...
the drinks are strong, the music very danceable. the crowd can get bridge and tunnel-ey at times but people are well-behaved and polite in general, even when it gets to it's usual shoulder-to-shoulder crowdedness on thursday nights for 1984. thursdays are my favorite, but i've been back many times on the weekends. many regulars and good friends hang out here. if you get too hot, there's always the high-velocity air conditioner in the back room. - greg , posted 01/27/05

One of my favs in SF
I hate to make it more popular, but the place rocks. I go to 1984 on Thursdays (get there before 10, to enjoy a little space before everyone shows up) and Rocket now and then, on Saturdays. I wish FAKE was still happening on Fridays though- that was once my favorite period. I've lived in SF for many years, but I like the the bridge-and-tunnel crowd- i like to be somewhat anonymous here, so I can dance with abandon. If you read this and show up, come say hi. You can't miss me- I'm the dancing freak. - Joe , posted 11/20/04

too crowded and hot
I am really torn here. The music is usually really good - stuff I don't always hear anymore. But most of the crowd seems to be of the bridge and tunnel variety and thinks that two girls dancing together is an invitation to come up behind them and try to butt dance with them... like the saturday night live sketch. Pushy guys suck. Ruins my groove. Some of us really do only go out dancing to, um, dance.

And the place is always steamy. Bathroom line sucks.

But the music is fun. I haven't written it off, totally. - Eileen , posted 11/18/04

Best Intimate dance club w/ a sleazy dive bar feel
And yes, that's a good thing. Cheap door prices, drinks aren't too expensive. 1984 on Thursday nights is great if you want good 80s dance music and don't mind a crowd. Rocket Saturdays kick ass! The staff are pretty cool. Our group loves to make a night of it at this place. Oh -- and if you have an exhibitionist-streak, I recommend dancing in the cage or on one of the stages - fun! - Serrephim , posted 10/20/04

yay!
The cat club has the best music and the best drink specials for the best price. Hands down. So of course it's pretty popular. It tends to draw a youngish crowd on the weekends. - Sarah , posted 10/19/04

Get there before 10! Pup-u-lar!
This place has friendly staff and a open feel. Fans and music keep you cool. The back room is my personal fave.....I feel very at home with my 80's angst. Arriving before 10 gets you in free, after that, it's a mere $5 for a trip back to the days when you hated your parents and you were misunderstood. Kinda like now, but your boobs were perkier. - Suzi O! , posted 10/18/04
