Two things are pretty much guaranteed at Tartine: you're gonna wait in line, and the food is going to be delicious. Never mind the hipster detractors, Tartine is unique and has no equal in the neighborhood. You must have a Morning Bun, the house masterpiece. But don't miss the ham & gruyere croissant or the grilled sandwiches or the cookies, which are magnificient. The Mr. Espresso drip coffee is good but the espresso machine gets the absentee treatment and is very so-so. Try Ritual Coffee Roasters up the street a bit for a macchiatto instead! Service is slow and sometimes sketchy. You must have at least 2 facial piercings and/or an ironic T-shirt collection to work there. Still, those Morning Buns.... it's worth wading knee-deep through the attitude. - Scott , posted 07/31/06 |

It amazes me how they can make such convincing simulacra of French desserts that taste so off. I had some kind of chocolate pudding thing: there was a nasty skin on top, and what was underneath barely tasted like chocolate. I've had a couple of other pastries that also barely tasted like the French versions they attempted to copy. Tartine reminds me of the Mexican pastry stores in the Mission: the pastries look so sweet yummy like ones I've had in Spain, but instead they taste like cardboard. The espresso is better than Starbucks, but not as good as Peet's. They make these pressed sandwiches that are supersaturated with oil and the bread is almost as tough as jerky. I swear there's a KFC bucket's worth of oil in each one. So. Gross. It really gets my goat that this place always has a line out the door. It's two blocks from my house and *I* never go there, yet people are coming from all over town. WTF? - davel , posted 04/15/06 |

to die for. My particular favorites are the ham and pastrami ones. Banana cream pie and coconut cream pie are incredible - they have a chocolate coating on the inside of the crust. Lemon tart is fabulous. Morning buns! Best quiche! If you get the solid chocolate pie tart whatever thing, get smaller than you think you need. It's so rich that even a die hard chocolate dessert fan like myself had trouble finishing it (as in, I didn't). The 6" pie will be fine for 6-8 people. Big pie? Fine for about 20. - korin , posted 06/16/05 |

Recently had some great bread, but even more so, an amazing, organic Birthday Cake for a friend, so good and everyone (25 people) got a heaping piece. I adore the staff! - Patricia , posted 12/01/04 |

Bread pudding. It's the perfect food - warm, filling, not too sweet, creamy, a little tart depending on the fruit that's in it - and Tartine makes some of the best out there. Love love love. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/24/04 |

The baked goods and desserts here are simply delicious. My friend used to work here so I've sampled lots of desserts (passion fruit mousse pie is amazing). The place is kind of small though so it's not the best place for timeless lounging. - Elizabeth , posted 10/18/04 |

the best brioche hands down, amazing quiches... really, you can't go wrong. Coffee cups are small but refills are free, anything you order will be out of this world. Try the bread pudding. - domini , posted 10/15/04 |

If you are having a baked goods craving, and you can only go to one place in SF - Tartine is it! Expect to wait in a line, but it moves fast and is well worth the time spent for the delightful treats you can get here. I highly recommend the sugary sweet morning buns and the wonderful fresh quiche that you can get right out of the oven in the a.m. - Valerie , posted 10/11/04 |

I grew up in Montreal, and have travelled in France- this bakery is truly amazing- the best croissants outside of France. Try the Neiman Ranch ham & cheese croissant- you will melt into your boule de cafe au lait. - Catherine , posted 07/28/04 |

Tartine is the closest thing there is to a real french boulangerie/patisserie in San Francisco. Fresh baked breads, pastries, and cakes using quality ingredients (organic flour, valrhona or scharfenberger chocolate, fresh organic produce, Strauss family dairy products, etc) come out of the oven all day. The croissants are wonderful -- buttery and chewy, without being greasy. The morning buns are delectable cinamonny treats perfumed with a hint of orange. The hot-pressed sandwiches are hearty and tasty, and the coffee (beans by Mr. Espresso) is bold and flavorful without being harsh. In short, Tartine flat out rocks -- everything I've tried there is great. - Victor , posted 07/26/04 |
