I wouldn't know. I just joined on a friend's invite. It is kind of hard to get around, but I guess I'll figure it out. I don't know what code to use in messages or blogs in order to arrange the text and stuff. HTML doesn't work. It does kind of have an off-putting slick, professional ad designer look, but it is not the cover of the book that matters, it is the quality of the words inside. I had no idea there were ads. I guess I could look for the giveaway "Advertisement" label. I use FireFox and the fox doesn't like ads anymore than I do so I don't see them anyway. - Unsubscribed , posted 04/23/06 |

Just to add my voice in addition. I think everything said. It looks like tribe did two things that seem to drive the design at least - one the ads, which, okay I do not like but could live with if that was the only thing,... it's not... horrible red and wite and large white and all I think maybe either trying to cater to an elderly audience (yeah, not!!) or the've gone color blind... I've adjusted to most changes, though highly dislike but I just can't seem to adjust to this color scheme!! OH my gosh!! This new design for Tribe is AWFUL, and I haven't heard anyone with an opinion otherwise. And now I have to click through some kind of advertisement when I log in? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? Tribe used to seem like a really awesome website. I'm totally lost in trying to navigate through my profile, make changes when I want to and try and find other tribes. This whole new interface is awful. I much preferred the original. Curious how this design got through a beta test as is? Curious-er still if it was ever put infront of a group of users not involved in the design. It took me a week to figure out how to get to my mail. Now that I know where to look I see the little envelope icon all the time and think I have mail when I don't. Took me two weeks to figure out why sometimes I went to my area when I clicked on My Tribe and sometimes i went to listing of all locations. Its not intuitive, things are difficult to find, there is no "roadmap" of how to get where. I did prefer the old design for usability, however I could live with this one if only you would listen the issues your users are having (rather consistant themes here) and fix the navigation issues. - Mary Ellen , posted 02/16/06 |

Thank you for trying to make TribeNet better... The new looks seem fake and does not feel right... It also seems harder to navigate the new version of tribe net... before the TribeNet change I would rate the looks at 9. now I rate the looks at 1... Ever heard the expression, "Once a scene becomes a scene it's no longer a scene"? I was dancing along the path, openly engaging and conversing with lovely, interesting new friends just outside my circle...and then the spectators showed up and started staring and pretty soon we felt like puppets on display, a veritable freakshow. Not that performing isn't fun... Yep, this is weird, this star-spangled red and white facade. First I got messages telling me that a picture of me breastfeeding my child was inappropriate. Yay, I'm not really thirlled with the new tribe. I liked the old tribe, but I would like to see more options. Such as being able to customize the background, add music to the page, etc... would be a nice touch. But agreed, this red and white is way too brite and I feel really limited to what I can do in "MY TRIBE". There's more space on the page, which I like but I think more revision is needed... It's so freaking bright....I had to turn the brightness on my computer screen way down to look at it. All that white and aggro red. How about some blue, black, brown or something??? What was nice about the old layout is that it focused more on community. When you logged in, your home page showed listings from people in your area and people up to four degrees around you. Now your page is YOUR friends, YOUR friend's blogs, YOUR stuff. Me me me me me, right? Community dies and staunch individualism is born. I do commend tribe for providing an amazing **free** service such as this one. I've met lots of great people through here. has anyone noticed the wording.. "my Tribe".. me's think "myspace" but in a different layout just logged in for the first time in weeks and MAN did this place (TRIBE land) ever change. I noticed my layout is now generic and I guess need to shift things around.. hopefully it won't be to bad. I really enjoyed the layout before tribe changed. In addition to the old tribe being more attractive it had links to get to my messages at the top of every page, and the things that were most important were easier to get to. Although i appreciate that tribe needs ads to create revenue, i detest ads on my personal tribe page. As a result i have taken all personal photos off the page to avoid having my images next to big ads. This makes my personal site much less personal. however...the look is all wrong for the Tribe user. the layout is complicated. you had so much going for you by being different. i now feel kinda like i'm on the "popular kids" network...like we went from secondhand store to the GAP. i don't know, it's more a feeling than what i can actually pinpoint. why is it so tacky now...? who thought it was a good idea...did'nt you all have a vote or something? it is hard to believe that several people, on a planning comitee, would actually pass this new set up. sorry, to be a DOWNER. My sentiments EXACTLY. Thanks for putting the words into my mouth. "yes, the color scheme is pretty horrid, but my biggest complaint is actually the browsing. whereas before, you could see everything in one place, now certain things are truncated or mixed up in such a way that the information on the "main" user page is just a jumbled mess. i used to be able to see all of my friends' recent blog posts in one space, but now all of that is mixed up with their listings and reccomendations and events . . . and _forget_ about looking at info on the tribes. yes, i realize that you can see _just_ threads, or _just_ listings at once, but it was rather nice to have all of that recent information on one page, rather than having to tab through several in order to see everything that's new. in the meantime, why can we no longer see _all_ of our tribes on the main user page? i don't know about anyone else, but for me, the tribes that have the smallest number of new posts are the ones i'm reading the most frequently . . . the very same ones that are truncanted on my main page. that's absolutely useless to me. as for profiles, now things are squished so that things are narrower, so if your name exceeds a certain amount of space [or characters], you just don't get to have your whole handle on your own usepage? before, it would at least start a new line in that case, but now, not so much. on my profile, i'm missing two characters off the end of my handle because the view is so inflexible. giving us a userpage that has a layout similar to the profile page seems to have been the goal in mind with these changes, but because they're inflexible, users are unable to make tribe into something that works for them. please bring back our tribe to us. hell, maybe you could even offer the different site layouts to us so that we could choose which one we want to use! at least then, you'd have a clearer idea as to what people truly do prefer instead of simply seeing a ton of dissent and that's all. then you could phase out the lesser-used version and improve on the prefered one! say you'll do it for all of us who are frustrated with this new look! please? ~e. - .grannybitter. I really think you missed the boat. The fonts are harder to read, the graphics at the top of the page are tacky, the red/white hurts my eyes.... I find it weird that with so much talent on here you coudn't come up with something better. The navigation is confusing and many of the good features have been hidden or removed. Sucks. Sucks. SUCKS. I joined Tribe because it had a certain bohemian/artsy/Burning Man vibe to it. It was so much different than the other networking sites. Now it is indistinguishable from them. Hurts my eyes, hard to navigate, FUCKING ANNOYING ADS, has slipped into completely avoidable mediocrity. I could care less about "marketing" - give me a TRIBE of free spirits I can relate to!! I don't know how much longer I can tolerate all of the gentrifying changes with Tribe. First the format changes....then the advertisements.....and now a totally new sucky format. Soon we'll be getting announcements that Tribe is going to be purchased by Disney. Remember when *they* switched the Coca-Cola formula to "New Coke", and everyone flipped? It wasn't that the old Coke was so great, but after the switch everyone screamed "my God, this sucks! Switch back NOW, or we'll blow your house down!" And after a short time they did, everyone rejoiced, and Coke sales were thru the roof, bigger than ever. So that's what tribe's doing: they re-created the site so that most every part of it is inferior to the previous version, then after a lot of squaking by all the members, they'll switch it back and listen to all of us say "thank you oh thank you kind sirs!" and tribe.net will be bigger than ever. Kinda shocked at the crappy product you just handed us. I hope you are actually listening to the TRIBE users when they say the new version sucks because I have to agree. I haven't really been on TRIBE much these days, whereas before, I was a pretty regular user. Don't know how much I'll be using THIS version. Thanks for all the hard work you guys did. What else could possibly motivate you (Tribe) to do something so clearly reviled by your beloved constituency. I know some of the people who were involved in Tribe early on, and they all rock. Who the hell is at the helm now? All I can say is that I have come to value this site as a way to connect with my people, but I am starting to look into other options. It's really a shame that tribe feels the need to listen to it's advertisers over it's members!! Because once you lose your members you will then lose your advertisers anyway! The one thing I really like about the new version: the majority of the screen real estate is taken by content. Before less than 1/3 of the width was the actual content. The rest was columns of "other stuff". That was especially frustrating when reading discussion threads. But just about everything else in the new version is bad. The color scheme, the front page, etc. I especially dislike that they got rid of (or hid) the feature that made Tribe unique -- the ability to say "search for stuff, but only show things with x degrees of connection to me" in just about any section. There is some implication that many of these things will be customizable in the future. If I could customize my color scheme and what content is displayed on my home page, I'd be reasonably happy with it. I've heard these things are in the works. I only log on now and then anymore to see if they changed back. Tribe was an all too brief shining moment of clarity for community. So sad it's over. But at least the advertisers are happy and, after all, isn't keeping advertisers happy the reason for living? I know that's the only reason I watch TV or go to a movie. If only I could let them paste ads all over my bedroom walls <sigh> then they'd really be happy. And whats with all this patterning and color on my clothing!? Specifically because of the irritating in-your-face ads and the horrible bright-white "internet dating" look of the new Tribe, you will rarely see me here these days. Though I was never really all that attached to the site to begin with, I have noticed a distinguished shift in energy to a lower vibration. I was attracted to this site by the enormity of Spiritually minded, Deeply Passionate, Divinely Inspired, and outwardly honest and Soulful population that reside here. yes, the color scheme is pretty horrid, but my biggest complaint is actually the browsing. whereas before, you could see everything in one place, now certain things are truncated or mixed up in such a way that the information on the "main" user page is just a jumbled mess. i used to be able to see all of my friends' recent blog posts in one space, but now all of that is mixed up with their listings and reccomendations and events . . . and _forget_ about looking at info on the tribes. yes, i realize that you can see _just_ threads, or _just_ listings at once, but it was rather nice to have all of that recent information on one page, rather than having to tab through several in order to see everything that's new. in the meantime, why can we no longer see _all_ of our tribes on the main user page? i don't know about anyone else, but for me, the tribes that have the smallest number of new posts are the ones i'm reading the most frequently . . . the very same ones that are truncanted on my main page. that's absolutely useless to me. as for profiles, now things are squished so that things are narrower, so if your name exceeds a certain amount of space [or characters], you just don't get to have your whole handle on your own usepage? before, it would at least start a new line in that case, but now, not so much. on my profile, i'm missing two characters off the end of my handle because the view is so inflexible. giving us a userpage that has a layout similar to the profile page seems to have been the goal in mind with these changes, but because they're inflexible, users are unable to make tribe into something that works for them. please bring back our tribe to us. hell, maybe you could even offer the different site layouts to us so that we could choose which one we want to use! at least then, you'd have a clearer idea as to what people truly do prefer instead of simply seeing a ton of dissent and that's all. then you could phase out the lesser-used version and improve on the prefered one! say you'll do it for all of us who are frustrated with this new look! please? ~e. - .erinnn. , posted 01/25/06 |

I was one of the Beta testers. We've been telling Tribe for weeks how bad this design is, and they haven't listened. They just rolled it on out anyway. Don't look for them to change it back. I'm sure there were many meetings had. I'm sure the intention was to make the new look MORE appealing, MORE user-friendly, MORE intuitive and MORE capable of blending advertising with site content. I'm sure in the meetings this all sounded possible, and even as the testing was occurring the tribe staff was talking amongst themselves trying to get pumped up by the new user interface. cause with one simple add placed all over this site I could steal tribe's entire (almost) userbase in one fell swoop. Why you ask? Because I'm a people pleaser and as long as its doable and legal I would listen to my customers and change my product to suit their needs. I don't know the answer, but maybe if you looked at your users art work you'd have more of a sence of what type of aesthetic they are looking for. I feel like I should be checking the prices on diapers for my baby on this site, not looking for freinds and it is not more user friendly. It's PITA to navigate. I really want to enjoy tribe, but even with that desire firmly in place, it's difficult for me to slog through the site. It's hard for me to imagine a new user enjoying the site. The bad: The colors are a bit to bright for my liking. Hopefully, things will be a lot better when they get customization in the mix. The good: I think the new layout is a cleaner and less cluttered. It only also only took me a few minutes to figure out how to navigate everything. Possible changes: In the posts in individual tribes make the reply to certain people more apparent like some type of angle line thing. Also make the posts have multilple pages after say 50. After 80 or so it crashes my browser. - Major

This is just terrible. Besides searing my retinas with the blinding white, they took away all of my favorite features. I can no longer see a list of my friends' blogs on my homepage, I can no longer see a list of the events happening this week on my homepage, and there is nowhere on Tribe where I can see a list of the events I have posted so that I can update them. These are all the things I used to like about the last interface, so they took them away. Every time I log on, my avatar is invisible again, no matter which picture I choose. I understand that the system errors lately are due to functions being switched over and set for the new format - and I would be much more patient with that IF I was happy with the changes made thus far. For months now we have been receiving emails about the changes coming and then one day - I logged on and an old friend had undergone surgery worse than the jobs done on Jacko! Photos are small and when you click to enlarge they are grainy and blurred; as so many have said - really who designed the new graphics - more so - what target audience was in mind at that meeting?? Tribe's such a great networking tool which many really use. Unfortunately the new version doesn't seem to be an improvement- quite the contrary...Here's a little constructive feedback.... 1) Lack of visual heirarchy makes navigation confusing 2) System "errors" kept happening during messages and posts. I kept getting bumped off every other new page and kept having to "login". I eventually just gave up. 3) Icons are more suited for a childrens site. They are really cheesy. I'm a designer and I'm embarrased- I find them visually appalling. 4) Overall, this "upgrade" has left me, a designer who is a highly active, seasoned networker, avid tribe whore... very FRUSTRATED. The last version could have used a couple new buttons (like one to delete "recommendations" and "tribes" which weren't sucessful. Perhaps there are some benefits to the new version- but I doubt I'll have the patience or desire to try to figure out how to jump threw those (hideous-- sorry- but true) hoops. Please take this feedback into consideration. The white background strains my eyes, and the font is difficult to read at some weights. So much for accessible. The red-on-white color scheme is more reminiscent of a fast food restaurant than a virtual space that I want to spend time in. So much for comfort. The recent crackdown in the name of decency far in excess of other sites makes me feel unwanted. So much for community. The navigation and default views with post threads, photos and announcements all lumped together makes it difficult and time-consuming to find anything of interest. Also, the ubiquitous animated advertising hosted on overloaded servers makes the pages load slowly and sometimes not at all. So much for usability. usabaility has devolved in this release. finding information is difficult and spotty. if this is what tribe.net wants to do, fine: release the source code of the previous version to the GPL. it's not fair that a great site like tribe.net be taken away by over aggressive managers. a great product, like apple computers, went through a similar idea of reducing features and customization for profit, but i dont see what could be driving the profit of this move. give us the source code of the previous version of tribe.net so that we can make it do what we want. thanks in advance, andrew - Unsubscribed , posted 01/22/06 |

First of all my deepest thanks goes out to all the folks workin behind the scenes at tribe.net trying to satisfy a mass of ungrateful, gluttunous, arogant, spoiled users. It must not be easy. I myself deeply appreciate all the hard work you have put into making tribe.net the fabulous online community it is today. Keep up the hard work. Lets give thanks people. This response is so intersting to me on several different accounts. First of all how people never fail to get thier freak on again and again in the face of profound change good or bad. Second of all on how archaic peoples communication skills are. It seems most people are completly clueless as how to give constructive feedback. Think about it, if you were working on a project or whatever and made a mistake which scenerio would serve as more constructive A: all your co-workers yelling at you telling you what a pathetic peice of shit loser you are or as they judge and blame you for being human or people maturely offering thier supportive caring feedback so in the future you would be inspired to change your work. It also makes me look at once of the many reasons democracy is obsolete in this country. Overall I like Tribes new format, not so much the new look. I'm new to Tribe myself having joined in December just before the change. Since I have experienced both formats, and have not programed my brain to be comfortable with the old version, I think i'm in a good position to comment. 1) :::Advertizements- I don't notice that the amount, type or size of the advertisements are any different . Then again I'm using Firefox browser which has an ad-blocker. I see about as much blank space (space where the ad's would have been) as i did using the old format. Could the intrusiveness of the ad's be due to their size relative to the sizes of things in the users fields (fonts,icons,etc)? 2) :::Layout- The move to use distinctive graphics, at the top of the page, to indicate general navigation is a plus. I seem to remember the old version having only a string of words indistinctive and harder to get used to (being new to this whole thing). The placement and catagorising of all the rest of the clickabe stuff seems better...although i can't put my finger on the reason why. 3) :::Colour and use of graphics- I agree with most people; that the white background is hard on the eyes and changes my mood. There needs to be more bullet-type symbols used. The font is a bit too small and my name and icon are also too small (leggo my ego!). For a service that caters to mostly artistic type people the look and associated mood should be a priority. You can complain about how you've supported the site, but how about you really support the site and not type stupid stuff you would never say to a real person in front of you. I know what it feels like to be on the side of something that people don't like/can't work with, so in the spirit of service by actively making changes and while growing your integrity as an organization, I offer the following: the few things that I think are improvements -- having all of the email/message functions on the home page, for one--can be incorporated back into the previous version of Tribe. Actually, the above improvement is the only one I find helpful. I took into account that it takes a little bit of time to get used to *any* type of change. So, I granted that. Now, I also must speak to my immediate sensory response to Tribe's new look: Warmth is missing. Grey and red speak of empty and void welcoming content. There was a warmth about the previous version that allowed users to navigate with *all* of the senses (save for smell and touch), meaning that graphics play a huge role in how to get around. Granted, there were a few signposts missing, but I think those things can be remedied AND you can have a graphically brilliant site. One reason I'm not particularly attracted to the MySpace site is that it's ugly. Graphically it's cumbersome. It's unfortunate that Tribe has seemed to follow in a similar vein despite and against the suggestions of its members. As a result, I don't and won't spend much time here and find that I'm not compelled to use the 'invite' button much either. The ads are huge! And they're not in harmony -- product-wise at minimum -- with the 1) function of Tribe and 2) with what the majority of Tribe members seem to resonate with. I grant that you'll take our considerations to heart, independent of the feedback that has been brought forward in anger, frustration, and disappointment. These are telltale signs that something is NOT working and needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. ...and unimpressed. After all the buildup, I was expecting an orgasm, but your improvements have quelled my desire. I hope you will find my comments constructive. The graphics and layout are simplified, giving the pages a less "busy" look, which is the only improvement I can really testify to, but the graphics are of poor quality. Do we members look like Jack and Jill? What next, stick figures? Personally, I don't mind red, but it does have that generic catch-your-eye advertising feel to it. It takes a bit of patience to get used to the streamlined look, and figure out how to navigate again, as it is not always apparent how to find things. When I went to my homepage, which should be about ME, I was horrified to see it was full of only my tribes, my friends, my friend's blogs, and advertising, until I realized it was the default page, not the profile seen by others. But I still don't care for it, even if only I see that default page, it is an assault to my senses! Due to the endless smattering of ads for products by companies I do not endorse, and download graphics everywhere, the pages seem to take a long time to complete. Also, I see only one photo on each tribe, not the usual gallery. Rather than change it completely back to the orange (yuck) and old format, there must be a way to incorporate the new and improved functions with a more superior layout and graphics display. I would like to see an integration of form and function, one that takes into consideration the intelligence, sophistication, creative and aesthetic sensibilities of your tribe members...before they refuse to assimilate and defect from tribe. Of course, you could just change the site name to BORG.net. and tell us, like it or not, we will be assimilated! But then, that's not evolution. Oh my god... okay, so I thought it was bad before when I first saw the changes...and because of the drastic and non user-friendly changes, I hadn't had time to actually do all the Tribe surfing that I normally do.... But have been checking everything out this evening and I am so done with this. This is not fun anymore. The interface is cumbersome, confusing, counter-intuitive, harsh on the eyes and head, navigation feels like trying to get through a fucking maze, hundreds of clicks and hours of scrolling and the look is juvenile and reminds me of MySpace which is a site you couldn't pay me to use again. I'll bet Forrest Gump could do a better job on the design... Message traffic and posts appear to have dropped off considerably since the new ugly UI has been implemented. Tribe members are either completely confused by the new UI or just totally disgusted with it...either way hardly anyone is posting.... I hope the powers that be @ Tribe are happy with themselves.... I'm sure I'll get used to it. But there are things I certainly don't dig AT ALL. It's not enough of a change to turn me off and get off Tribe, I value my connections more than my criticisms of the layout and connections...-but-... the changes that HAVE happened aren't cool. I've been a member for almost 2 years now and have seen a lot of changes - some good, most not-so-good. This change is BY FAR the worst. I've gotten terrible headaches from staring at the stark white. It boggles my mind that the Tribe Admin are being so deliberately deaf to the complaints and suggestions from its active and formerly-loyal consumer base. I can assure you I'll be on a lot less often now. I'm in the process of whittling down my tribe list to an essential few so I don't have to waste a second longer than I need to here. And one more thing. I've heard quite a few folks saying things along the lines of "Well, it's a free service...you get what you pay for so deal with it." BULLSH*T! NOTHING in life is free. It's a linguistically null concept. We pay Tribe in our time, effort, and contributions to discussions. Literally, without us, there would be no tribe at all.
