Do we want businesses in the Castro who are rude to good customers?
I have been a customer at the Castro Squat and Gobble for several years - I go there a few times a week and probably spend about $2000 on a yearly basis.

I had a very bad experience there a week ago where I felt badly treated and disrespected

I wrote to the management of Squat and Gobble but got no response

I went in about 2:30 in the afternoon to order an ice tea; there was no line and it was fairly quiet in terms of other customers. I was asked if I wanted to sit inside or outside and I said outside; the person at the counter (sandy haired younger guy) said I couldn't unless I ordered some food. I said given the fact that it was not crowded and I was a very regular customer couldn't I sit outside and he told me, no, it was the rules on the weekend that you had to order food to get an outside table.

I decided to leave and go somewhere I could sit outside but the Cafe Flore was too crowded so I came back and said " I think your rule is ridiculous when there is no one here and I am a long standing customer but I'll buy the tea and sit inside even though I think that is very bad customer service" Another man - who looked like some kind of manager- came up to me and said " If you cant watch your language , you will have to leave" I was surprised and I said " Excuse me, I haven't been inappropriate or rude in any way. I am just giving feedback on something I don't agree with. I think its not good customer service to alienate a good customer over some little rule" The man then said" I don't care if you are a customer, we wont put up with this kind of behavior". I was just aghast because I had not been rude in any way or used any inappropriate language and here he is practically telling me to get out. I thought the man showed a lack of interpersonal or customer service skills and he was just plain rude. I said " well in that case , I would be glad to leave and I will not be a future customer here" and he seemed not to care at all essentially saying" fine, go"

I have trained and consulted on customer service skills professionally for nearly 20 years so I was just disgusted at the very poor response of this man and the total lack of courtesy and good customer service skills. My experience with the other staff has been good but the man who seems to run this place is rude and should not be in the people business.

Brunch with a view
This is *the* place for Sunday brunch if you want to watch all the Castro boys! Grab a table outside and enjoy the view. - Mike , posted 10/20/04

Lower Haights best weekend breakfast spot
People like to say that Kate's Kitchen is the best Lower Haight breakfast. They'd be wrong. The food at Squat & Gooble is far better. The only problem is be prepared to wait because it is usually very busy in the late morning and early afternoon. And one has to be very aggressive in finding a table once you have ordered. But once you do it is all worth it. And there is plenty of eye candy around you while you eat. It's an excellent view of all types in the Lower Haight all coming together in the same place. - Jon , posted 10/16/04

Best weekend brunch without the long wait
The best thing about this place is that you can go in, order your food, sit down, and eat - and be done all in the time it would take you just to wait for a table at most other SF brunch places on the weekends. The coffee is particularly good, and the food is very good. The menu pretty much offers something for everyone. - Alissa , posted 10/15/04

squatting and gobbling: my two greatest loves
Yay crepes! Lots of menu options, all delicious. Prices about average for the overpriced Castro. Dessert crepes are especially good - very judicious use of nutella. The rosemary potatoes are excellent, as is the salmon sammitch. Always an A+ on presentation and decor, and the outdoor seating is nice enough. Pasta tends to be a little overboiled; some of the greasier foods can have a, ahem, "loosening effect" on the intestines. Otherwise high marks for an excellent option for any meal. - Matt , posted 10/15/04

Best Brunch in Town
I've frequented this place a number of times and must say that they have one of the best brunch's in town. The food is delicious and the portions are good sized, and the price is very reasonable as well. The Mimosa's are especially well priced. They serve, eggs, pancakes, crepes, french toast, and just about anything else you would consider eating for breakfast. I highly recommend you check it out. - Boyelektric , posted 10/15/04
