What was once the best cafe in San Francisco, has simply gone downhill. AVOID.
Rude Staff (especially in the morning), Floors and WALLS seem like they have not been cleaned in a year.05/23/2007 Posted by citystaff

I live nearby to Simple Pleasures and have been a patron for over 8 years. It used to be a nice place to come to read a book, listen to live music, or just relax with other neighbors. However, something has gone terribly wrong with management of this cafe. 1) they have hired rude counter people and do nothing to remedy it. -- there is a man (i won't say gentleman) who acts like he hates to be there. he constantly counts out the minutes (aloud) to the end of his shift, and I saw him deride a customer in front of me (with sarcasm, and then loudly going to each counter person saying -- hey check this out ... he wants "no room" in his coffee. go to starbucks fella!" -- and then proceeds to fill the cup only 75% full. I felt sorry for the unwelcome customer 2) If you walk to the back area (past the piano and very disgusting couches) look on the walls under the tables, and you will find coffee stains from over a year ago. There are crumbs from patron's food on the floor, and frankly I dont sit on the couch anymore because I just dont know what is on those. It's really too bad. Management has made too much money from this place and they have forgotten, that it is RESPECT and APPRECIATION for their customers which got them this far. They need to train their staff better, or simply get people who care about service and a SIMPLY PLEASURABLE experience at Simple Pleasure Cafe. It is also too bad that they have hired staff who don't clean up! This is a health code violation just waiting to happen.

Pros: Inexpensive. Nice alternative to chain coffee stores

Cons: Smells at times. Dirty (coffee stains on walls, crumbs on floors). Rude counter people (especially gent who wears a leather cowboy hat in the AM) - City , posted 05/23/07

sweetest cafe on balboa
simple pleasures..... ahhhh so many of my family's fine artists have worked there, some still do! remember the ladies' night dj sessions? top floor days when even i worked there! i strongly recommend a special latte from dae (he's the one with the dreads to his waist and a bullwhip tucked into his belt), a veggie bagel (for here, thank you and hold the onions) and lounging out front with your roomate's dog smoking nattys and watching the horizon. follow this with a slice of carrot cake : but be sure to ask your barista for a cold slice from the fridge : then the icing doesn't stick to the cling wrap. this spot is classic and if you're at the beach, it's the best for when it turns blustery. at 36th on balboa, opens early and closes late. really great hot cocoa and madelines for the munchkins, too. - , posted 01/09/06

Home Away from Home
This place is the best and has been my favorite for about 6 six years. It's cozy, you can sit and read for hours, have coffee *or* a beer. And, you'll probably make a new friend while you're there. - Robin , posted 01/02/05

Home sweet home
I have been going to Simple since high school and it is always great to come home to. It's a great place to spend some time in during the day for a coffee, food or a beer. Friendly staff, strong coffee and a welcoming vibe. The mural was painted over 20 years ago by a travelling group of hippies in exchange for a place to sleep and it hasn't changed much since then. The veggie and cream cheese bagel is big and yummy and a great deal for less than 3 bucks. Chinos right up the street has great burritos. - Anna , posted 12/01/04

Best Cafe in the City
Not only are the coffee-slingers gorgeous and great baristas, but the atmosphere is perfectly cozy. - Zeke , posted 10/15/04
