but, one day i was walking by..(i live in the hood) and noticed the "help" unloading huge pickle containers full of food out of a REALLY dirty wht. van...it was very unsanitary and really gross to watch...i've been in the professional food biz for a while..and food sometimes has to be moved or emergencies do happen..but this was just plain GROSS. Dar Bar across the street is a little bit pricey..but clean.. - Redtat2 , posted 09/11/06 |

its as authentic to indian food as you can get in CA! loved it. - Unsubscribed , posted 09/30/05 |

I go here every day, where else can you get a leg of chicken cooked and seasoned to perfection for 3.50? the naan could be a bit better, but not much. - David , posted 08/17/05 |

This place is waaayyyyyy overhyped. Some of the worst Indian food I've had. Plastic tables and order-at-the-counter service describes the atmosphere. Not at all worth it for the food. - Ananda , posted 04/20/05 |

So the decor and service isn't the greatest, but the food is good and cheap. Definitely have the saag gosh! - Unsubscribed , posted 04/13/05 |

Shalamar is still my favorite SF Indian joint. It can’t really hold a candle to Vic’s but you don’t have to go across the Bay to enjoy it either. Shalamar is to Indian cuisine what Tu Lan is to Vietnamese – limited menu, sketchy neighborhood, greasy tables; in short, it keeps the riff-raff out. If you’re the kinda chow-hound that treks to Queens for the real deal when yer in NYC then this place is for you. - Inspector , posted 03/23/05 |

****o If you can take the trek through the Tenderloin This is the place to have Indian/Pakistani food. Cheap, authentic -- the Indian/Pakistani to other-ethnicities says it all. Not for the squeamish when it comes to panhandlers and drug dealers, as you are likely to find parking in a pretty sketchy part of town. It's all worth it in the end. - reeser , posted 03/22/05 |

Food is OK -- interior is terrifying. - Unsubscribed , posted 11/04/04 |

A cut above Naan and Curry in the cuisine department. Not as good as Tasty Curry or Darbar in my opinion. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/16/04 |

Good Indian food, but the place across the street is better and same prices. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/15/04 |

My friends and I just ate there at the Polk location this past Sunday and we ordered a ton of food. For the price of the food, it was good. My only complaint would be that we ordered everything mild and all of our dishes were spicy. We all were reaching for our glasses of water instead of our wine. BYOB is a plus. - Marc , posted 10/15/04 |

The one on Polk St. is my favorite, but they're all good. Spicy and flavorful food all around. - Tony , posted 10/15/04 |

This is some of the best Indian food in the city. Yes, there are like nine Indian restaurants within a three block radius in this area, but this is definitely one of the best. Warning, it is self-service for the most part. - Eric , posted 10/14/04 |

But it's not cal cuisine.
shalimar yes! back when it got mentioned in s.f.magazine, they avoided "tenderloin" and described it as being located "on the edge of the theater district." riiiiiiiight. but it's not cal cuisine. - will , posted 11/12/03 |
