Thank God I don't have to shop at Whole Foods anymore!
This place kicks WF's ass. I'm so glad that I stumbled across it.

Only complaint - they have so many delicious vegan treats there I'm bound to eat my weight in cookies, cakes, donuts, chocolate, etc. before long! ;-)

I come all the way out from Daly City weekly, because, well, food is just that damn important to me. - Sugar , posted 08/04/07

Best "FAIR TRADE" chocolate bar selection
I'm hearing that October is "FAIR TRADE" month. For those who are hip to that and live in SF, there is no better selection of Fair Trade CHOCOLATE than at Rainbow Grocery. Their prices are actually about 20% lower than the boutique chocolate places and they have all of the yummiest bars that you can feel so good about on so many levels. Treat yourself! - Raye , posted 10/07/06

Rainbow the People's Republic of Grocery Stores
It's a great place, but geeze get over yourself alright already. The PC factor is a bit much. I don't want to know that my beef steak died a peacful death.

On the plus side, wonderful selection of bulk items. Unlike TJ's you can buy fresh produce without all the plastic. - jones , posted 07/09/06

disappointing
I keep wanting to like rainbow, but having trouble.

They don't carry fresh juice - only reconstituted. And nothing flash pasturized.

They do post signs sometimes about things like how egg producers treat their chickens, which is useful. - , posted 11/09/05

Best flirting
Not only do they carry specialty items but I ended up dating two of the cashiers. Customers can be flirty too - Marty , posted 09/30/05

Great goods, well presented
Having come of age in that grocery co-op mecca, the Twin Cities, and worked in a whole foods distribution warehouse lo these many years ago, I heartily applaud the Rainbow folks' good work, getting the good goods out to SF.
Worth a stocking up trip to the city every month or six weeks, even now we've moved down the peninsula, for those good dry goods and bulk goods, and yummy organics. - Ruth , posted 09/25/05

Wonderful specialness
Rainbow Grocery carries an incredibly wide variety of products to suit all flavors of healthy lifestyles. Every time I decide to try out something new I find it sitting happily in its place though I never noticed it before.

Yes, there is "yuppie pricing" on some of the prepared foods, nor is it perfect. It is only wonderful. - Bruce , posted 06/27/05

???
Ok, the food's good, but you can get FOUR times the amount of food at Trader Joe's for the price at Rainbow. The checkers are slow and talk on their cell-phones while checking people out...? Glad I live near TJ's. - Shannon! , posted 06/03/05

smells like food
i go here and if i was feeling grumpy or kind of unraveled, rainbow fixes that right up. because it has that smell kind of like myrrh, and grassy. it smells like food, which can't be said of most modern grocery stores! there are cute boys at rainbow, and tubs of figs and bins of grains and numi rooibus tea. me and j signed up for the cheese registry! you can do a taste test and they'll score it in a book for later, because it's so easy to forget the names of crazy cheeses that you tried just once and loved. - Unsubscribed , posted 05/26/05

Very much a community place
Rainbow is one place were, when I shop there, I feel at home. I am a person who sometimes feels out of place in Safeway or Cala, but not at Rainbow. Their food is about as healthy as you can ask for, even the junk food isn't so junky. Its a very good place for people like to be politically conscious when they shop, with items that are either environmentally sound, or from other worker friendly places or both. - Tedster , posted 05/08/05

The best co-op in town
Rainbow groceries has a comprehensive selection of vitamins, fresh locally grown produce, and the staff there is knowledgable. They can answer any questions you may have about any and all of the products featured in the grocery store. - Space , posted 04/03/05

Extraordinary cheese section!
What a mindblowing cheese section! And cool cheese people, too. Love for the bulk bins. Great selection of things in general. OTOH, there's no meat there and everything's pricey -- but when you need the good stuff (beyond what Safeway can offer you), that's the place to go in SF for me. - Kai , posted 11/23/04

The Best!
Yes, they are expensive, but the produce is awesome, the bulk section is awesome. They even have a raw foods section! Everything = awesome!

(BTW, they do sell some meat: pet food!) - Unsubscribed , posted 11/21/04

Worker owned, great selection, great store!
A lot of people complain that the prices at Rainbow Grocery are more expensive than other stores, but I have only found that to be case with items that I don't go to a specialty store for.

Their all-organic produce section has a huge selection and great quality, great wines for reasonable prices, and their cheese section is just plain crazy! They have a vast bulk section including nut butters and an array of liquids and oils, as well as bulk cleaners and bath time stuff! Theres is also a huge vitamin and dietary-supplement section that is organized better than the public library, and tons of awesome employees who always seem down to answer questions.

I used to eat lunch there almost every day, try the taro-leaf wraps in the back fridge section! - Jenni , posted 11/20/04

No frills
Rainbow is one of those places that makes me feel lucky to live in this town. I can nurture my inner hippie/food snob without shame at Rainbow. I've found and fallen in love with food there that I previously didn't know existed (mochi, tempeh, soy yogurt, ...) - Unsubscribed , posted 10/20/04

Excellent grocery, politics occasionally get in the way of service
I can find stuff here that I can't find at Whole Foods or the Harvest Urban Market. Great bulk foods section. On an unhealthy note, it's also the only source I've found for maple sugar candy in San Francisco. - Linda , posted 10/20/04

hooray for worker owned co-ops!
i'm sure you all must know about The Greatest Grocey Store on Earth....yeah, it's expensive, but it's organic/nonGMO/independent, etc. the best thing is the bulk stuff. and the hard to find weird foods, 15 varieties of olives in bulk (!!!) tincture ingredients, and abundant variety of vitamins. i love rainbow. i wish there were more. - sandwich , posted 10/16/04

Best organic coop grocery
I have been suprised many times at how many people in SF don't know about Rainbow Grocery. This is the coolest store ever. If you are into organic/natural/holistic anything...you'll probably find it here. If your into recycling you can bring in your old bottles of beauty products/cooking oils/bulk ingredients/etc., and fill them back up without paying for the new packaging. Their cheese selection is fresh and yummy. I can't say too many bad things about this place. They have almost everything someone living organically or just aware should need. Check them out if you havent already! - Gypsy , posted 10/15/04

If you can put up with it, it's great
It's like the Costco of natural food stores. Far and away the best prices, best selection--however, not the greatest produce, and sub-par service. The whole banning all products from Israel thing that went down a couple of years ago is a good example of how the employess are so self-righteous, and of the overall attitude there. But if you can tolerate that, it's a great store. - ColonelTCB , posted 10/15/04

Huge selection of alternitive products and foods.
Rainbow sells no meat.

Good thing to know. They do however sell every type of fake meat you can imagine.

Their produce selection is the best I have found outside a farmer's market.

The deli is hit or miss but I have had some very impressive curried veggie wraps.

The only drawback is the lack of bag boys. I am bad at packing groceries and have lost eggs and bread because of it many times.

Enjoy! - Lilah , posted 10/11/04

Awesome natural body/skin care selection
Don't just go for the great prices on great healthful food - they have a great bodycare section and you can refill your bottles and get discounts! Bring your own bag and get 5 cents off. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/11/04
