whoa..
i've been going to osento for years and where it is indeed owned and frequented by lesbians..it is hardly exclusive. Not being a lesbian I have never felt out of place there and find it to be far less snooty then any "spa" in town. I appreciate there being a place like this for women of all shapes, sizes, and sexual orientations where we can be comfortable with our bodies without wandering eyes and comparisons.

I am very sorry to hear that this place is closing if that is a fact. - Sarai , posted 04/20/08

Save Osento
If you know and love Osento, the bathhouse for women in the Mission District, the owner is planning on closing shop. From what I understand, it's a done-deal. Osento's owner is moving into a well-deserved retirement. The building's been sold and the new owners are planning on tearing out the facility and remodeling it to apartments again. That said, let's brainstorm some creative ideas to sway the new owners of the building to keep this San Francisco institution open.

Huh?
It's skanky, it's snooty and worst of all, it's a "lesbian bathhouse," that discourages lesbians from being lesbians. "Puritanical" is a word that comes to mind. So does "homophobic." And finally, unsanitary rules the day, there.

In a word, Osento sucks. - Miss Jane , posted 02/16/06

A quiet slice of peace in a very hectic world.
I love this place. Even the quirky parts. - Alison , posted 11/27/05

I love it
It's really welcoming and wonderful to be around a bunch of relaxed women of all shapes and sizes. It's definitely a bathhouse, not a day spa. There's no soft music, flowers, or pastel colored walls. But what it lacks in ambiance it makes up for in being clean and affordable. - Felicia , posted 05/10/05

Seriously in need of some Feng Shui
I love the idea of a bathhouse for females - indeed, it is a goal of mine to open one soon.

However, I was really disappointed when I saw how funky and energetically yucky Osento was when I went there. It felt like the mens locker room in high school - musty, wet, cold, funky (in a bad way) and cheap.

Come on ladies! Invite some prana in there! A little color, some uplifting and tasteful decor. If you need help - I'll offer my services. Women deserve so much more than this barebones bathhouse. Even Kabuki's got great style...

Don't even get me started on the locker room at Harbin...

Not negative, just expecting more than the bare minimum of decorative effort from our local bathhouses... - elsa , posted 02/24/05

I adore this place
What's better than limitless sessions of sauna/hot tubbing/relaxation time? Girls only, by the way, and no clothing allowed. - MariNaomi , posted 10/15/04

great place to relax
I love this place. Big hot tub, wet and dry sauna, and they're open til midnight. It's also sliding scale so you don't have to have a lot of money to treat yourself to something nice. They also have massage, and you can bring food to eat on their ourdoor patio. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/15/04
