The Odeon is a sanctuary for the weirdness that makes life worth living. It partly justifies the stupid rent we pay to be in the Bay Area. It makes killing your television more than a bumper sticker from my childhood.

Owner Chicken John - showman, punk rock clown, gutter bon vivant, enfant terrible of the Burning Man set, and self-described "humble monk" - created this haven as the venue for performers who are too unclassifiable to get booked anywhere else in this hypocritically narrow-minded art town.

You will not score at the Odeon. You will not order a blender drink or anything ending with "-tini" that doesn't begin with "mar" without getting some well-deserved attitude. You will not put on your cool jazz face and critique the scene. You will not be allowed to passively drink and just watch what's happening around you.

What you will do is be amazed and engaged as you are conned into breaking the social barriers that you comfortably live in. You will lose your programmed concepts of cool as you don a huge bunny mask and sing "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" for Costumie-okie. You will laugh in delight as a 24-year old accordian player with a voice grittier than Tom Waits will trick you into tickling the armpits of the former strangers standing next to you, then get busted surreptitiously sniffing your fingertips. You will ponder the mysterious questions of the universe as they are answered by a co-founder of Church of the Sub-Genius, while sipping a shot of Fernet Branca as your reward for asking.

Unless you check out their website, odeonbar.com, you won't know whether you'll be titillated by a sexy cabaret show, sucked in by a stoner spelling bee, or twisted around by a twang-chung band who does AC-DC covers bluegrass-style. And that's just this week.

The Odeon is fun, dammit.

They deserve your hard-earned money for being this haven. They deserve your money for being the first chance for just about anything that can't happen in real life.

And they deserve your money for fighting on the front lines of the gentrification takeover that threatened all live performance in San Francisco. Chicken deserves a big fat thank you in the form of top-shelf drink orders for taking on those who would sacrifice the life-giving giving creative sparks of untraditional, interactive entertainment so that they could turn the Outer Mission into the Outer Sunset.

Go to the Odeon and a good time is guaranteed, just so long as you are willing to play.

Oh and the drinks are good too, so for f--k's sake, tip your bartender. - Nicole , posted 04/06/05

Totally try out a Thursday night (costumed kareoke). Any night really. Wish it was bigger. - P-Raw: Faery Supe... , posted 12/20/04

The Odeon; Why Not Bother?
Become part of a community where no one is accepted.

Spectacle is the first word that comes to mind. You can go on any given night and watch something. Take your deaf friends and it's fun for them too.

Take your friends that never get lucky. They won't get lucky and neither will you -- you'll both enjoy not getting lucky.

Creativity and Diversity and great bottled drinks. You won't be badgered to buy, or to put-out, or to fight random people. All other badgering is provided for purely cathartic purposes. - scot , posted 11/15/04

you got a better idea?
seriously, people, why go to a bar without bartenders lighting exploding bottle rockets when you can go to the odeon? - sarah , posted 10/15/04

Weirdest , Coolest Bar in San Francisco
The Odeon is more than just your average Mission bar. They have all kinds of different performances from Porneoke (Kareoke with Porn playing in the background) to Cowboy Rappers (you gotta see it to believe it). On any given night you'll experience something new. - onlineDarian , posted 07/28/04
