Co$tly and Condecending
this place charges $2.20 to get a large cup of coffee from some pomp-ass baristas! Certain employees seem like condicending liberal fascists and the prices are for the new-money types it caters to...Hi, this is still Oakland!!! - bugger , posted 06/28/07

OK, but bagel prices suck
I like bagels. With stuff. When I went to Nomad, I was informed that each additional item was 75 cents extra. What about 75 cents for a little bit of everything, and not a whole 75 cents worth of onion? Not an option.

So, a bagel with cream cheese, onion, tomato, capers, cucumber works out to about $6. No thanks.

Oh, I gave a 2 rating, because there seems to be a rating war for this entry. Really, I'd probably give it a 3, but an employee of the place gave it a 5 star rating, which the place is not. :)

General review: WiFi works fine, coffee is good, food price is stupid, service has room for improvement.

greedy?
For the record, I work at the Nomad Cafe so my "5 Star" rating is a bit bias. I merely wanted to comment in regards to "Pilsbury"'s ridiculous comparisons.

Yes, after 3 years we raised our prices for the first time on everything, including our internet terminals. While all of our distributors have been raising their prices at least once a year, we held out as long as we could before finally having to either raise our prices or close up shop.

While $10/hr is not as cheap as the $6/hr at the Used Computer Store, it is cheaper than the $12/hr at the next closest place (Kinkos).

Furthermore, "fair trade coffee at unfair prices"? This just makes no sense. Fair trade products are inherently more expensive than non fair trade products (just as organic products are inherently more expensive than conventional products). Selling a quality organic and/or fair trade product at the same rate as a cafe that uses the cheapest product they can find IS unfair, it's unfair to the business.

There's that old saying "you get what you pay for" ... If you want to save 75 cents, then go up the street and buy coffee that was picked by farmers living in deplorable conditions and served with milk full of chemicals ... It's pretty simple. - Unsubscribed , posted 01/18/07

Nomad is Fine with me.
The Nomad fills what was previously a gaping hole in Shatttucj Avenue food & Beverage business. It has made a very positive contribution to the community. There is often music there in the evening provided FREE of charge.

I say give the folks at The Nomad a break.. and stopy by for a tasty cup of coffee or if you're fortunate enough to own a laptop, enjoy their FREE Wi-fi. ( and NO, I do not work forThe Nomad) - ☂Skylar , posted 11/26/06

so don't rent the computers, then
Yes, the computers are expensive to rent, but the wi-fi is free if you bring your own laptop, and they don't seem to care how long you stay there and use it, as long as you buy a coffee refill or a muffin or whatever every once in a while. I do my work there whenever I'm in town. The food and drink is excellent, they play good music, and the atmosphere is friendly. Giving them a bad rating for expensive computer rental is sort of orthogonal to the point of why most people would go to a coffee house in the first place. - Frank Jones , posted 11/22/06

Oh dear god!
It's a cafe, don't log in there if you don't want to, but if you're going to do some serious hanging out pay the extra 75 cents and go for your favorite atmosphere--if that's what you want. At any rate, why I choose a cafe is based on so many things, and changes by mood. Heck if I wanted nomad over Jump n, I'd just get a decaf if price was that much an issue.
I don't get down to shattuck cafes often of course, and if I do, I opt for whole wheat scones at Sconehenge as my default. I just don't see the need for this extreame drama about it. - , posted 11/22/06

Boycott the greedy
This cafe has the most expensive internet platform;asking a whooping $10 for an hour, compared to the used computer store downtown Berkeley w/DSL for just $6 for an hour. Nomad was $7 ( still expensive )and then went to $10 this month and that is just discustingly greedy. Fair trade coffee at unfair prices. Example; a double mocha at Jump N Java just down the street from Nomad Cafe is just $2.75. At Nomad you will fork out $3.50 for a double Mocha. Please don't support greedy businesses like this one, all they do is jack up the prices for everyonelse. - Pilsbury , posted 11/22/06
