Which came first.
The bar or the genre... that I do not know.
I hesitate calling Noc Noc a "cyberpunk" bar but honestly, the first time I stepped into the place (mesmerized by the window decor I might add) I felt like I was living a little in William Gibson's future. The music is usually not what one would hear at any other bar or club. Current and classical rock and techno hits all sound like what a dive bar jukebox of the future might play if the jukebox was breaking down since the DJ's warp it all up a bit.
As has been said the decor is incredible. From every table setting being exactly not like another one to the collection of funky art (and I know some is from some Lower Haight local's as they themselves still frequent the place to the feeling that the DJ is the real voyeur as the booth is a molded shape akin to a voodoo nightmare and an island mask with little slits where they look out. The bathroom is decorated by the users for the most part. The bar used to look the other way on smoking until someone turned them in but that was another feature I liked about the place, even though I no longer smoke.
This place is all about ambiance and grabbing a drink after a long day of work while meeting up with friends and neighborhood locals. There's complaints they don't serve hard liquor, which they don't, but at least for me I know if they did it wouldn't have the same feel or laid back crowd. One could always pop off to Molotov's for a shot if ya needed anyway, which my friends have done. Grab a sausage at Rosemund's or a slice from Mythic or a sammich from Love N' Haight then come back, get a beer, some wine and I think they have sake too, play some cards, shoot the shit and take comfort in the fact you're at a place that if anywhere else would be a trendy tourist trap.
Shhh...
