Danger on MUNI?
When did MUNI become so awful? Having lived around the SF Bay on and off for 10 years, I know it's not perfect, but it seems to be getting worse.
I was on the long (double?) 30 bus around 8:15am, and it cuts out at Stockton rather than going the entire route through the Marina (apparently it now does this every day). To take me the rest of the way, I had to cram myself onto the stairwell next to the driver of a bus that was 1/2 the size and stuffed with grade-school kids, and at every stop, the driver crammed more and more people on, until we were stuffed like a tin of sardines from one end of the bus to the other, hanging off the stairwell and in front of the yellow safety line, clearly a violation of MUNI policy.
I think people know the double-bus cuts out early, and they all wait for the small one to take them exactly to where they need to be. Unfortunately, it makes for an overcrowded and possibly dangerous situation. Why not let the smaller bus be the one that cuts out early, or run 2 of the small buses back-to-back?
The current situation breeds anger and contempt among passengers, and for quite some time now, residents of the Bay Area have been told to take public transportation, and we've been made to feel guilty when we choose not to do so. As for myself, I've only had to ride the bus again recently, as my vehicle failed inspection and needs to be repaired, but honestly, though we supposedly have one of the better public transportation systems in the country, I can hardly wait for my car to be fixed so I don't have to deal with the bus system anymore, and with public transportation being as awful as it is, why in the world would anyone with a choice want to ride the bus? With all of the money and resources we have in this part of CA, why are we accepting this as the status quo? We've got elementary school kids hanging off the stairwells of speeding buses, frustrated drivers yelling and piling more and more of us on (I haven't seen anything this reckless since I rode Jeepneys in the Philippines and rode my high school bus -- also dangerously overcrowded, what with 4 of us to a seat -- as a youth) until there's no room to move even if your stop comes up, and the complacency of the current administration, which has, in my opinion, done absolutely nothing to remedy the situation over the years.
Anyone else experiencing this kind of frustration? Is there anything citizens of the Bay area can do to alleviate the problem aside from driving our cars or having to ride a bike some 30 miles every day?
