An intriguing, clever piece of work
I saw the performance "1K: this end up" last nite at 1000 Van Ness ave. It was in the AMC theater building where the wooden stairs are. when you walk up the stairs and go thru the door, you basically feel like you shouldn't be there. It totally felt like you were in a building being renovated. The chairs were set up in front of a huge curtain of bubble wrap; beyond that a huge piece of paper; and a plain looking secretary who typed on an old word processor over the music.
As the performers made their entrances, a wonderful shadow effect was orchestrated with simple lights, lamps with the paper curtain. Once that was removed, the corner space of this area was ful of all sorts of boxes with the performers giving you the feel of an office with cubicles. As it went on the performers would reconfigure the boxes and themselves with little or no interaction with each other. At the finale, there was a wall of shredded paper exposed as a back drop.
Music fit the piece entirely with its ecclectic sound and noise. The lighting was very basic but this work didn't need any sort of fancy colors.
All in all, you gotta see it for yourself. Using a space that looked condemned and never used as a theater piece was very creative. It's only $10, starts at 8pm on Friday 3/9; 7pm and 9pm on Saturday, and runs for about 40 min. Go catch a movie after show or some eats!
