fakin' deliciousness!
I was just mentioning morningstar bacon to my friends this morning as they savored their real bacon at a restaraunt. Why, I wondered, don't restaraunts just keep a box of the fakin (as we lovingly call it) in the freezer for veggie guests?! I've been vegetarian for 13 years and have no desire to go back, but the one meat product I've had a tough time doing without is bacon. Morningstar farms solved that problem... granted, their fakin and sausages are a far cry from health food, but they are also a much healthier alternative to the real deal. I, too, have actually had to flag down waiters to make sure that they got my order right...

Who says vegetarians can't have BLTs? (try it sometime, they're divine...) Oh, and Trader Joe's now sells the Morningstar Farms Bacon... yummmmmmmmers. - all-i , posted 11/06/05

Vegetarian? Wanna be? Miss yer bacon and sausage?
So I'm in a restaurant, and I order some "veggie" sausage patties. They arrive, I take a bite, and immediately ask the server if there's been a mistake. The sausage tastes "real".

So I'm in another restaurant. I order a spinach salad with "veggie" bacon. Again, I flag down the server after tasting it. I am assured it's not "real bacon".

What I was tasting in both cases was a Morningstar Farms product. Their motto should be "So good they are scary."

The sausage tastes like, well, sausage. There's nothing else to say.

The bacon is the closest to the real thing I've ever found. Broken up in a salad or on a meatless burger with cheese, it's nearly indistinguishable. But the real test is what does it taste like by itself? If you prepare it in the oven, it's actually good by itself. You can tell it's not real if you *really* want to be picky of course. But if you really want to make the switch and pork products are a sticking point, this is a really good product to help. It's helping me. ;)

By the way, the bacon is so realistic that when you burn it by accident, it even smells like "real burnt bacon". Not sure if that's not just "praising with faint damns" or something but it's really true.

Now I know Morningstar has been bought be Kellog's, and I'm sure that's a problem for some people. But I'm trying to get around that myself. Personally, if it helps me cure my bacon/sausage addiction enough to replace them in my diet, and if it helps others do the same then maybe that makes it ok. It can also be found in a mainstream store, which let's more people know it's there, and since Kellog's marketing muscle is behind it, it gets prime shelf space at eye level. So I try to take the good with the bad. - Unsubscribed , posted 07/12/05
