Mitchell's was located on the corner of Alemany and Onondaga in the late 60's and it IS the best ice-cream, coming from an ice-cream professional. They also had pizza that was outrageous and it kept all of us high schoolers pretty happy. I'm 54 years young now, and that was quite a history ago, yet I was extremely delighted seeing that they are still around. I'm in the city once a month, so I will stop by! Thanks Tribe!!! Before I even knew what a "Filipino" was, I imbibed on macapuno ice cream and other tropical treats at this far-from-secret ice cream parlor. What can you say, the wait is long but that's because the chow is so tasty. The Mexican chocolate was another revelation for me, and while I'm not eating as much ice cream and other processed-sugar desserts as I once did, it's hard to beat for a pick-me-up on a cold and rainy day in San Francisco (go figure, some people just get the craving on the unlikeliest days). - Todd , posted 05/22/07 |

Avocado, Buko, Mexican Chocolate, Ginger, and sometimes Spumoni! I wish they didn't use corn syrup or carragenan, but it still is yummy. The lack of parking and long lines are all a part of the experience. Pull the earphones out, turn off the cell, and talk to people you don't know. - Ron , posted 02/22/07 |

Everyone's going to hate me for this, but read the ingredients on their packaged ice cream. Stuff like artificial colors and carageenan, or was it agar? it's been a couple months since I've been there, but they definitely use ingredients that affect the taste which you wouldn't put in your homemade ice cream. I'm totally behind the idea of a small local ice cream parlor that makes delicious exotic flavors, but they could do better. - Aviva , posted 11/26/06 |

I have such blind faith in Mitchell's that I would try a flavor called "Dog Crap", if they made such an ice cream! - Michael , posted 11/25/06 |

Mitchell's use to be a "native" secret, but now the whole world knows. It's been around since I was a teenager and my high school boyfriend use to bribe me for mysexually charms for a chance to taste their Mexican chocolate or canalope! It's a taste of my history, and can become a taste for yours!!! The Best San Francisco Ice Cream By Far...And Beyond!!! - Luna , posted 10/06/06 |

I loooooooooooooooooooove! the Lucuma flavor ice cream they have. I go almost every other week to purchase the 1/2 gallon bucket & get on the express line to avoid the swarming crowd. I recommend calling in advance in your like lucuma or similar 'exotic' flavors so that you don't drive just to find out that they are out of it. This place rocks except for the almost non-existent parking. Ciao, - Unsubscribed , posted 09/23/06 |

but a little over-rated. The service is okay-- if there wasn't a line about a mile long-which there always is. - jones , posted 07/09/06 |

It's pretty darn good! The line can be a bit of a drag though, if you are in a rush. - Meow , posted 04/18/06 |

In general, I could live without ice scream. 2 exceptions are Michell's and cappuccino It's It's. Not only is Mitchell's ice cream yummy, there are amazing flavors. If you don't want to wait in line, St. Francis's fountain on 24th st @ Treat sells it, so does Scoop on P. Hill. Not as many flavors though. - LiaBear , posted 06/09/05 |

Try the lychee ice cream. It only comes in the half gallon container. But if you like fruity ice cream you might be pleasantly surprised by this exotic and unusual flavor. - Carla , posted 05/25/05 |

The macapuno ice cream is heavenly! Big chunks of fresh, young coconut, mmmmm.....Damn, I'm hungry now! - Unsubscribed , posted 04/10/05 |

Mitchell's is certainly the best ice cream parlor in town, and they're pretty tasty. Unfortunately, they use both carageenen and corn syrup in their ice cream, and you can taste it. Personally, I don''t trek down there because I can get Strauss Family at the grocery store. - Channing , posted 04/04/05 |

I remember getting mango ice cream from Mitchells about 10 years ago, then I promptly forgot about the place. About 6 months ago, I found it again, while driving south-ish on San Jose Ave. My current favorite flavors: macapuno, mexican chocolate, and at Thanksgiving, they had a lovely pear sorbet. - Masouma Rose , posted 02/16/05 |

A huge selection of ice cream. Flavors from classic chocolates to vanillas to stuff like mango and crazy something or other. Be prepared to take a number and wait in line. 30 minute average wait. Or just buy a bucket and you don't have to wait at all. - Pete , posted 01/26/05 |

The best in the city by far. Around Christmas time they also have not only eggnog ice cream , but their liquid eggnog is killer as well. - Bobzilla

My favorite is mint chocolate chip but their speciality is exotic flavors, including Avocado, Buko, Guava, Langka, Macapuno, Mango, Pineapple and Ube fruit from the Philippines. Some of other popular flavors include: Thai Tea, Rum Raisin, Chocolate Caramel Crackle, Passion Fruit Sorbet and Chicago Cheesecake. Over 40 flavors available for you to choose from every day. Be prepared to wait in line unless you grab a quart and head for the express line! - Priscilla , posted 10/18/04 |

Not a lot of seating options, but the freshest ice cream, and enough variety to give anyone a melt-down. You can get a taster spoon of anything, but even without one, I have never been disappointed in a flavor. - Alexandra , posted 10/18/04 |

Very creative ice cream flavors (some of which are geared toward SE Asians). Nice portions and the ice cream is always good. - John , posted 10/17/04 |

Did I mention that the Ginger ice cream is the best? I first tasted this at Tangerine Restaurant in their Ginger Beer float. Sweet and spicy and very creamy. Other favorite flavors from Mitchell's are Mango and Buko. Even though it's a little bit of a drive for me to get there it is well worth it. Luckily, they have their own parking lot. This beats out almost every other ice cream parlor I have ever been to. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/16/04 |

The outside is all old-school ice cream shop, but the flavors are out of this world. Wild, exotic flavors utilizing fruit from the Philippines and southeast Asia. Don't miss the durian ice cream when they make it -- they only produce it once a year, due to the ovoerpowering smell. - Hedonia , posted 10/16/04 |

Mitchell's Ice Cream makes their own ice cream and it's delicious! So many flavors to chose from. My favorite is the Mexican Chocolate - the hint of cinnamon is fabulous! :D So are the prices. Half gallon tubs for $7.50!! - sharkie , posted 10/15/04 |

Every time you go to a really good diner, you can count on one thing: They serve Mitchell's ice cream. Easily the best I've ever tasted. Enormous selection too. Avocado?? - ColonelTCB , posted 10/15/04 |

We ALL scream for Mitchell's Ice Cream. Located at San Jose Avenue and Guerrero, this is some of the best ice cream you will ever taste. A San Francisco tradition. - Jennifer , posted 10/15/04 |

Man oh man, am I getting hooked on their Ube ice cream. Mitchell's has turned me into an experimenter. I used to be a faithful vanilla-only guy, but ever since trying all their new flavors, I rarely get the same thing on two successive visits. - Renegado , posted 10/15/04 |

Even a lactose-intolerant person can't resist. The Mexican chocolate is supreme. - Kamomi , posted 10/15/04 |

Mitchell's Ice Cream has been my favorite since moving to San Francisco. They have everything from vanilla to exotic tropical flavors that include Avocado, Buko, Langka, Macapuno, and Ube. My favorites: Thai Tea, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Double Oreo Sundae! Prepare for a wait, but as long as you take a number you'll be set. Lines even on cloudy days. - J. , posted 10/15/04 |
