Ha! when i first met Mr. Growden about 15 years ago, he was just a scrawny 17 year old, playing a big baritone sax in the city college jazz band. Next thing i knew, he'd started a crazy art-rock group called "E is for Elephant" and was terrorizing the local populace with obscene music about trees and transvestites, all of it in bizarre, odd time signatures that no one could snap their dirty little fingers to. Then he moved away to some insane hippy organic farm complex, way out in the boooonies, started weaving his own clothes and eating nothing but roots and dirt. I caught up with him a few years later, sitting out in front of a brew pub that featured the jazz group i was working with, Mark had a digeridoo and was sitting next to a tiled wall, circular breathing and playing sounds that i never knew were possible from any instrument. I stood mesmerized for about 20 minutes until my break was over.... then, before i knew it, his full genius had emerged and he'd become a bleedin' Bay Area underground SUPERSTAR !!! woo hoo! and freakin' deservedly so. This man has talent to spare and that rare spark that so many performers seem to lack. Just try and pry that limited edition 45 single, packaged in his hand-made cloth artwork, number 720 of 900, from my cold dead turntable, i dare ya. goddamnit man! let me know when you need another drummer. - Sylent , posted 04/15/05 |

Don't worry we won't eat him for breakfast or anything, but he does have that cool vibe that makes anything okay. - zuzu , posted 04/13/05 |

Some of my absolute favorite music experiences in SF have been thanks to this boy. His songs are witty and playful at times, and heart wrenchingly poignant at others. He always sings with passion and enchants even the most jaded audience. I always feel like I'm apart of something special when I catch one of his shows. - Whitney , posted 04/07/05 |

Oh. That was just an example. Well goddamn it. Mark is just simply THE performer, making you be there WITH him, instead of simply watching a show. You feel this guy. You're a part of his performance. He starts singing and all the sudden you look down and your leg is doing some strange jig that you had no idea that you knew or hour hips are grinding in a deliciously lewd way and your eyes are half closed in a strange submission to the music and the feel and the sweat and the seductive energy that is a part of Mark Growden. Best fucking restaurant in the city. Succulent, Delicious. Well presented, and extrordinary service. You'll definitely be coming back for more. It's an addiction... - kSea flux , posted 04/07/05 |

I was at the Rite Spot, with all of the other drooling men and women, admiring his feats of aural buggery when the Holy Spirit itself came on down and the full-bar sing along became a Mark and me sing-along and then…Jumpin’ Juiced-Up Jehosephat...Who knows what lustful sleeping serpent uncoiled from the base of my very spine and allowed me to slip, for a while, into the jet-stream of eroticism that is this man’s performance style. I was glistening with delight to be asked to sing with him for a few more songs in the set, and then as I was concealing a barely restrained urge to kiss his boots right there, the was across my lap and crooning “Fuck Toy” just for me. Jesus wept, Erzulie danced, Sekhmet pounded back another barrel of beer and Ganesh giggled. If you have the chance to be in his presence, do whatever it takes. You cannot be disappointed. xoxo ~Mollena - Mollena , posted 04/07/05 |

"FuckBoy" is one of my all time favorite songs by anyone, if you go who will play it for me? Will I just have to listen to an mp3? He's something special... - Unsubscribed , posted 12/12/04 |

Corporeal splendor, outshining the usual. Was a pleasure to behold at Camp Kunst Stoff this past August...not a bad musician either ;) May success continue to court him and the same spirits that watch over Tom Waits smile upon him. - Cactus , posted 12/07/04 |

Get to know Mark and his devastatingly intimate music now, before the bright lights of the world's paparazzi steal him away from us. Heartful. Soulful. Utterly direct. A country boy and an urban freak, and many points in-between. Eyes wet as if to cry, but sparked from within by a dreamer's hope. Unforgettable. - SFSlim , posted 12/04/04 |

What a unique performer. Best of luck to him in New York, we'll all miss his music. I hope he'll be back at Camp Kunst Stoff someday... - Super Amanda , posted 12/16/04 |

Mark Growden works a crowd like no one else does. He backs up fiendishly electric energy and raw, sensual appeal with instrumentalism both masterful and raucous, and lyrics that shock for their range from baudy to tender, all delivered in a gorgeous, sweet, naughty mix that is truly moving. - num-num , posted 11/30/04 |

I've watched many a grown woman swoon in the presence of Mark Growden's raunchy testosterone-fueled presence. He somehow manages to keep his passion bottled up and tosses it into songs that are... well, downright OBSCENE. Mark's musical abilities seem to know no bounds as he switches from one instrument to another, and his voice really communicates the tortured growls of a man in heat. - Roger , posted 10/06/04 |
