great place for that midnight snack
if you're bored in alameda with nothing to do at midnight, just go to la pinata. it has a great bar, yummy food, and you'll always find people that you know. it has good service 90% of the time, except sometimes they hire waiters and waitresses that can't handle the huge crowd that is awlays in there, so watch out. :) but - Amy , posted 07/23/06

yummy margaritas
The food is decent but not impressive. The drinks, service, and atmosphere are excellent. - , posted 05/29/06

Best Mexicn Restaraunt in the East Bay
I had the Deep fried Red Snapper with Hot sauce , rice and beans and a killer top shelf Margarita. It is orgasmic! Freindly staff and exceptional food. Not the cheapest or the fastest but I have yet to find better Mexican food in the East Bay. - John , posted 09/04/05

Heavy hands
If there is one quality that I love in a bartender it's heavy hands. The bartenders at La Pinata make heavy handed drinks. Very easy to get sloshy here. Their food is good with generous portions and they are open late. Not the cheapest. - Dave , posted 06/12/05

Best Breakfast not just dinner and drinks
Best breakfast in Alameda and possibly San Leandro and Hayward. Not where you would think to go with Jim's and Ole's on the island (and Nation's) but this place has the best bacon and pancakes with a hint of cinnamon in the pancakes, yummm. Try the chips and salsa before coffee, and don't forget they have weekday specials before 11 on breakfast, the best of a good thing at a cheap price. - Randy , posted 11/15/04

Getting busy, but still some caliente famoso grub
L peezel the garden weasel. Well, when its late at night and I want a reliable sit down Mex dinner or snack or marg or chips and salsa and a tecate, this is the east bay spot. They've gotten really popular in the last few years for a good reason. A new bar and the service somehow has gotten faster. The famoso burritos and sopes come highly recommended. - B shots , posted 10/12/04

Open after the bars close
Because La Pinata is open (an hour) after the bars close, it is quite the place to be for late-night dining. One night I watched as Alameda's finest pulled over a drunk driver and gave him a sobriety test right in front of the restaurant. Free entertainment!

If you can manage to get there for happy-hour, you can order half-price appetizers which make a very filling and delicious meal. I normally get a half-order of what I want because the portions are so huge. I think it's impossible to leave hungry. Go ahead and try.

Also they have a wonderful tequila bar and is the only place around that serves a rare Chihuahuan beverage called Sotol (made from agave but isn't tequila).

The staff is friendly and efficient. Highly recommended. - Rusty , posted 10/11/04

Come for the Food…Stay for the Drinks
This is the best Mexican restaurant to go to for great food and great drinks on the island. They have over 100 types of Tequila. If you don’t know what kind of tequila you like, they have a menu for “flights of tequila” where you can order three grades of the same tequila (Silver, Repesado, and Enajo) or you can order three different tequilas all of the same grade. Not to mention they have Mezcal and they can mix it in a Margarita. They also make great Fajitas and the best Chimichangas. And if you have someone in the party that doesn't like Mexican Food, they also have Burgers, salads and other non-mexican food. - onlineKristal , posted 10/07/04

Comfort Food and Killer Margaritas
La Pinata is my very favorite Mexican restaurant ever. The food is very consistent, and there's tons of it. Most everything comes with sliced spicy pickled carrots (yum), the salsa is flavorful and not very hot, and the shrimp fajitas are the entire reason I like onions now, after a lifetime of fear. Be warned: the drinks are very very strong. I'm sort of a lightweight, and am about as drunk as I'm comfortable being after about two-thirds of a margarita. But, I'm also full and happy. - Kayte , posted 10/06/04
