best volkswagen mechanic!
I moved to the Bay Area about 1 year and a half ago, leaving a very good and reputable mechanic behind. My car has had a number of issues, since moving, and I have taken it to 2 different dealerships and they totally ripped me off. The first dealership completely ruined the wiring thoughout my car.

I saw many recommendations for Karmakanix in Berkeley and after explaining everything I'd been through, they checked everything out from top to bottom, inside and out and have fixed EVERYTHING for a fraction of what other mechanics and dealerships bid to fix. They were incredibly thorough and honest. They gave me a list in order of priority of the things that needed to be fixed and they've kept within my budget everytime. They managed to fix everything that the dealership didn't. (after I took it in 3 times because my transmission was acting weird.) In fact, they found that the dealership hadn't even checked the simplest thing.....the transmission fluid.

I highly recommend Karmakanix! - Princess , posted 07/25/06

great guy... if you are a car parts snob
i used to try to get Steve to service my beat-up vanagon, but he refuses to install anything but the most expensive parts. the last straw was when he wanted me to pay $600 for a part that i found at volkscafe for $39.95. he claimed that the cheap part would 'diminish my performance'. i tried to explain that i use this car to get me to the grocery store and back, not to enter rally races, and that the experts at volks thought it would serve me just fine for the rest of the five-year expected lifespan of the car. he wouldnt do it, and it was difficult to get my car back from him. he is a crazy genius, but you really have to love your car for him to be worth it. - Tara , posted 04/28/06

Great shop, good mechanics
I work at the shop next to their shop...
Steve is indeed a character but knows his VW's, no BS. They do fantastic work and if I weren't a mechanic myself I'd bring my car to them. - Sarah , posted 04/19/05

Talk about a Good Name!
Steve, the guy who runs Karmakanics, has been a mechanic for a long time. He is almost magical with VWs, though his big money focus is on Audis. This guy is a hippy type with a great attitude about life. He also has an all organic juice and coffee bar, blows glass, plays guitar and digeridoo, and I don't know what all... - Unsubscribed , posted 10/06/04
