Anyone can learn to make mosaics at IMA.
The Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland is one of the coolest places in the Bay Area. Housed in a bright purple building in the heart of Oakland's emerging Jingletown arts district, the place has something to offer for virtually everyone. There is so much eye-candy in this place that you won't believe it.
No art experience is necessary to go in and learn how to make incredible mosaic art through one of their beginning classes, but they also teach advanced classes for the experienced mosaic artist. ...but that's not all!
They have a lecture series on Friday nights wherein world renowned visiting artists show slides and give interesting talks about their work and work found all over the world. Wine and cheese is served and there is always an interesting exhibit up so for from $5-10, folks can stroll around and look at that or the incredible murals that are there, hear a first-class art lecture and see slides. (Great way to spend a Friday evening.)
There is a mosaic supply store right in the building where artists can receive individual advice and find virtually anything they need for the mosaic-making process.
I urge everyone to check it out. It is located at 3001 Chapman Street at Derby, just off HWY 880.
