Cool peeps
Yeah the kids are a little trendy, but they will talk to you. It is one of the only places in SF where it is ok for girls to buy you drinks =). My friends and I will definately come back. - Mischiefmaker , posted 04/01/08

safe haven in the TL
I love the Hemlock for shows and just hanging out but the stereo system SUCKS. And they still blare music in the bar area even when a band is playing, it's sort of torturous. - Erin , posted 10/15/06

Very nice place,
I was never particularly impressed with this establishment. The staff never did much to make me feel especially welcome and the rest of the people were so unfriendly it was hard to fit in so I spent most of my time in the smoking box. The music they play gets on my nerves. Why can't they play nice music that makes people happy and friendly? I ended up drinking quite too much to dull my senses to the inane society that surrounded me. A mixture of disappointment and boredom. - Unsubscribed , posted 10/07/06

Yes and No.
Most fun place to see live music in a true "intimate" atmosphere. The remodeled stage/sound system is great.
Totally different vibe in the live room than the bar itself.i like that.
I used to come down here to "do my dirty work' here...it seems liek the place is full of yuppies and hipsters meshing together-not necessarily getting along, but it makes me feel like I'm in a room full of idiot clones most of the time these days.
It's like a Mission Bar in the 'Loin.
Mon. nights are good.
Staff is good-like any decent BT,they are rude to all the RIGHT (wing) people,so shut the fuck up & wait (or go the fuck somewhere else).
The smoking room is gross, but smoking rooms ARE gross. At least it's separate...comfy barstools that you can stare at people from.
Don't go there,hipster-shit it's too late...fuck. - Unsubscribed , posted 02/25/05

Best booker in town, forget the bar, this is the best organized venue for music in San Francisco. - Unsubscribed , posted 01/06/05

Great bar, and best tiny music venue
If you're downtown, this is a great hipster hangout that doesn't seem to prentious. They have excellent cocktails and there's usually a great band playing on a regular basis. Take a cab though -- ZERO parking. - Bonnie , posted 12/23/04

live music, great atmosphere
The Hemlock Tavern is a large-ish, dark bar that seems to cater to the young band-driven crowd. You'll see a variety of punk-rockers, people in alt and hardcore bands, and some heavy-metal types. You don't have to be in a band to come here, but the separate live-music in the back seems to encourage it. You'll need to show ID at the door and pay a cover to get into the very back. Sometimes this place gets really crowded, but for the most part getting a drink or a seat isn't overly difficult. It seems to have a young, creative vibe to it. Check out the funky, 60's and 70's style overhead lamp collection. Great lighting in this place. There's a pool table for those who like to play pool in public and don't mind doing it in tight quarters. - Dave K. , posted 10/20/04

Great bar
This bar has it all: Cool interior, live music, pool table, "outdoor" (indoor) smoking area. The patrons off a good slice of what is good and friendly about San Francisco. - Jon , posted 10/16/04

cool place, live music, big layout
This is a really cool bar, drinks are a bit pricey for a non-yuppy bar but it's pretty cool. I'd give it 5 stars if I smoked, because it has the most brilliant layout for a smoking room-- technically it's outdoors, but it's more like a room where the fourth wall is a mixture of greenery and heaters. Awesome, but like I said I can't really appreciate it cuz I don't smoke... - ColonelTCB , posted 10/15/04

See local music but it never starts on time...
So, I do like the Hemlock. I like that they have Paulener hefe weissen on tap. I like the swivel chairs upstairs. I like the fact that you can see local bands in a small room to the side for a very reasonable admission price.

What I don't like is that shows never start on time. Now this wouldn't be an issue if shows/opening bands came on at say 9PM or 9:30PM. But most shows don't actually start officially until 10PM on a school night! Unfortunately I have to live with the fact that I need my 8 hours of sleep and must be home by midnight. So, please, please, Hemlock, start your shows on time. - Darian , posted 09/24/04
Recommendation & advice
If you are getting off work and are by the Embarcadero, it's pretty boring.personally. i'd just sit by the big arrow neat to the bay bridge if it's nice out.

If you're in the loin. you can at least go to the Hemlock @ Post and Polk and start working your way back downtown past Edinburgh Castle, HaRa, Julep, etc. and stop to get some good Thai comfort foood @ the Thai Noodle @ Geary and Leavenworth, then hit Club Six or 111 Minna.

But once you have to cut back north of Market again after 2, it pretty much sucks. bring a book, journal, or a friewnd with benefits.

happy trails! - Cory , posted 05/06/04

3)Turntables on the Hudson
when: Fri 1.16 (9 pm)
where: Milk (1840 Haight St, 415.387.6455)
price: $12 / $10 advance
links: Event Info | Turntables on the Hudson
NYC's beat-juggling maestros Nickodemus and Mariano, better known as the DJ duo Turntables on the Hudson, don't often get a chance to educate West Coast ears with their infectious blend of soul-soaked hip hop, Afrobeat grooves, and international appeal. That's because these Giant Step artists are too busy setting NYC's dance floors ablaze. Lucky for us, the Joypad is bringing out the duo for a special West Coast edition that ought to leave Upper Haight patrons wondering if they'd died and gone to, well, the Hudson. (JC)

this is a bit different
4) MUSIC: Avant Country
The Country Teasers
when: Fri 1.16 (10pm)
where: Hemlock Tavern (1131 Polk St, 415.923.0923)
price: $7
links: Event Info | The Country Teasers
After the Fall fell victim to Mark E. Smith vanity in the albums following 1994's Middle Class Revolt, the Country Teasers, a mostly English quintet, adopted their tutors' spittle-flecked crown with a wink and a swig of home-cooked swill. The Teasers' 1995 self-titled debut was a half-baked, nearly misogynistic call to arms (song titles: "Bitches F*ck Off," "Drove a Truck") tinged with a light twang. Subsequent records have continued the abrasive, Big Black-gone-country screed with occasional forays into lo-fi electro-pop via frontman B.R. Wallers' cassette-only side project, the Rebel. In this case, half-baked means really fun and really good, if sloppy ramble-rock and surprise New Order covers are your carpetbag. (YS) - Bill , posted 01/15/04
