If you are searching for a bakery that still uses butter, look no further. Greenlee's bakery has been providing top flight quality cakes, pastries and baked goods for 80 years. Their reputation is well deserved and they can transform an ordinary sheet cake into a work of art. If there was one single product that could be used to define Greenlee's mission statement, it would be their cinnamon bread. A loaf probably weighs in at over one pound and I've never had better. Loaded with swirls of oozing gooey cinnamon spiraled into their tightly crumbed dough, this is a taste of the hereafter. Whenever I want to provide my friends with a glimpse of the afterlife, I make French toast with Greenlee's cinnamon bread. Their pastries are of exactly the same caliber and specialty items like croissants show the correct number of 'turns' (foldings of the dough) to produce that particular fluffy layering effect that only repeated rollings and butterings can provide. In recent years they have also begun to provide an abbreviated breakfast menu plus a selection of beverages including espresso coffees. Still, it is their baked good that, literally, take the cake. I challenge you to take a loaf of their cinnamon bread to work and see how long it lasts in the coffee room. It is a Wednesday middle-of-the-week tradition of mine to always bring in a loaf of their cinnamon bread to my job. I've yet to hear a single complaint except about certain greedy whiners' waistlines. Located near the main Caltrain station and San Jose's arena, Greenlee's is a short hop off of the 880 freeway and easy to find in the Rose Garden district on The Alameda Avenue, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Silicon Valley. - Cowboy Chris , posted 09/09/04 |
