The moment I step in the door I feel like I'm transported to a dark dreary bar with lots of junk hanging on the walls and my mind is suddenly oppressed. So I order a drink and it's all downhill. O but hey she wants to dance with me! - Unsubscribed , posted 10/07/06 |

Great lit. geek hangout. Nice jukebox, not too shabby. - Unsubscribed , posted 09/02/06 |

The Edinburgh Castle is a San Francisco institute, its played host to some of the best British writers/musicians/actors over the years, folks like Irvine Welsh, Alan Black and London's own Mark Walshe. The only downside is that if there's nothing going on, it tends to lack in atmosphere and feels like a bit of a cave. Nevermind that though, there's been loads of great nights here, stretching back to Trainspotting's first run here in '96, and I'm looking forward to more. - Colm , posted 01/12/06 |

Plenty and plenty of beer on tap to choose from. The Jukebox selection is also amazing. It's got stuff from Alien Sex Fiend, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Kraftwork, The Streets, Bowie, Dr. Dre, Joy Division and the list goes on. Overall a wide variety of choices. The place reminds me of a pub that the Hobbits would go to and have a few pints. But what makes this place soooo awesome are the people there. No snobs, no slobs. Everyone is on a positive vibe. - Row , posted 08/06/05 |

This place has so many beers to choose from. It had an interesting crowd. We went early..and left around 9. It was starting to get full when we were leaving. - Addy , posted 07/31/05 |

This was the first bar I ever came to in the city and the spot where I have celebrated every birthday since. When I first started going, it was usually deserted even on a weekend night, and I would have long conversations with the old scottish and british gents who frequented the place and were happy to buy a girl a drink. Then the hipsters started creeping in, and now there's barely a night of the week you can find a spot to sit among the hordes of skinny ties and asymetrical haircuts. Still, I love the uk pub feel and the fish and chips delivery. - Unsubscribed , posted 07/23/05 |

... except for that whole State-mandated indoor smoking ban. Even the surly Glaswegian behind the bar adds to the ambience. Nothing beats back the whisky-induced haze like a good fish supper, properly wrapped in newspaper. Wash it down with a pint of Belhaven, and you're well on your way. Just avoid the place on Burns' night; it's complete amateur night and the Pipers they hire seem to have forgotten how to tune. Besides that, the Tuesday-night Quiz night is a blast and is the best thing in the whole TenderNob neighborhood. - Dougie , posted 04/22/05 |

but it's my absolute favorite drinking establishment in the city. - Goddess of Chipmunks , posted 04/11/05 |

The upstairs booths are nice for when it's slow and you'd like a decent amount of privacy for those heartfelt talks, or... - Unsubscribed , posted 04/10/05 |

Hell, they have a little theatre upstairs! I haven't played there in about a year, but it's still a great venue. Besides, if you want a nice place to kick back with a great vibe, greasy fish and chips, and good beer... you can't do better. - Dan , posted 04/07/05 |

For Britophiles starving for some decent fish and chips washed down by a proper stout, this is the place. And if you're lucky...after flirting with a hottie in a kilt, you may just catch some decent bands playing pretty much nightly. Cheers! - Bonnie , posted 12/23/04 |

Funplace with geat music, theater and events. Fish and Chips is the best in SF. Can feel cold and empty in there on a quiet night though - Michelle , posted 12/15/04 |

much agreed... great atmosphere. but most importantly to me, they have belhaven scottish ale, my favoritest beer, which i have not found elsewhere in my sf bar journeys thus far... - justin , posted 11/15/04 |

More scotch than you can shake a stick at & if you ask nicely they'll bring in fish & chips from around the corner. Highly recommended - Sara , posted 10/22/04 |

If you are looking for some good greasy fish and chips this is the place to go. It's served wrapped in newspaper. Yum! - Amy , posted 10/20/04 |

Sometimes years go by before I stop in to the Edinburgh. Yet everytime I go, its comforting, fun, filled with people and great pub atmosphere. Get fish and chips and a pint. Excellent. - Jeanie , posted 10/20/04 |

Pool, pints, fish and chips await at this jukebox-fueled Scottish-themed jewel in the rough. Great spot for after-show activites done at nearby Great American Music Hall. - Jeremyd , posted 10/20/04 |

There's a ton of English/Irish bars in SF, but this one-- strangely located in the heart of the Tenderloin-- is probably my favorite. Great atmosphere, like the inside of an English pub. It has a nice, often quiet ambience that lends itself well to low-key talking. The clientele is pretty diverse and runs the gamut, but it's also apparently popular with English expats. The barstaff usually consists of Brits, and service is competent and reasonably attentive, if served up in the typical cool, stiff-upper-English-lip fashion. You can bring in Fish and Chips from the neighboring restaurant, and in fact it's encouraged (menus at the bar). Never been to their quiz night yet, but there is a separate live music area upstairs. Recommended. - Dave K. , posted 10/20/04 |

This place is the don't-give-a-shit bar that was sent from heaven in this pretentious town. Throw in the best fish and chips in the city and some live punk rock upstairs, and you've got yourself an evening. - Gaia , posted 10/17/04 |

The jukebox is outstanding. Trivia night here is always amusing, besides, and palm readers and fish and chip joints abound. Couches upstairs, plus a semi-secluded room with a broken piano in it that will appeal to all of the ridiculous emo fantasies that probably led you down the road to this hipster pub, anyways. So just go. - naomi , posted 10/15/04 |

"Kind of grungy" puts it mildly. Dark sticky tables, super-sketch tenderloin, unkempt hipsters. But it's all in good fun, unless you're some kind of neatness-weirdo. Trivia nights on Tuesday are the best, and the greasy bar food is...um...perfectly appropriate. Nice balcony, occasional local performances, pool table, arcade games. Unremarkable drink selection, frequently broken restrooms. - Matt , posted 10/15/04 |

Although the neighborhood is a little sketchy, the bar is big and smoke-free and frequently features a bagpiper. Yes, yes, that IS a feature, not a detraction. I love Scotland and the Scots, and if you do too, or just want a cool place to hang and drink with friends, without feeling sandwiched in like a sardine with overly-made-up or cologned "beautiful" people, this is the place for you. Take the bus and have a shandy for me! (Pool tables and booths upstairs make it a good date bar, too!) - Dew , posted 09/05/04 |
