I've had Dreamhost since about 1999
They've been nothing but great. Unfortunately, for your purposes, it looks like the current PHP version is:

PHP 4.4.2 (cgi) (built: Apr 18 2006 12:43:08)

and the curren mysql version is:

mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.16, for pc-linux-gnu (i386) using readline 5.0

They've always been very responsive, so if you want PHP 5, I'm sure they can hook you up. They've got a nice web-based control panel, it's easy to manage multiple domains, etc. - Pete , posted 06/06/06

Dreamhost-Great for the cost
I've been with Dreamhost for more than a year, and I like them. I'm no UNIX geek, though I can get around. Lots of MBs for the $/month.
I send my clients to Dreamhost if they have simple to moderate needs. - Cupcake , posted 05/16/05

Funky Unixism going on
This comes more from a professional slackers perspective.

Dreamhost sort of bites the big one when it comes to the whole Unix shell thingy and trying to make your site do something remotely useful. I'm not talking about running a packet sniffer either!

First of I want to point out the *security* on the site. The company seems to go to pretty great lengths to ensure that you don't see what others are doing on the system. This reflects in the fact they limited certain Unix commands. However, with a little poking around (via c-programming), you still can bypass these restrictions. In other words, the engineers failed to do a thorough audit of the local cluster

Moving on, the company seems pretty anal retentive about the whole telnet thingy. This reflects in the fact everytime I telneted from my shell account and had a connection open for more than 30 minutes, the 'root' account would magically appear on the who list.

I also want to point the the total lag on the shell account. I think this comes down to when users add sub-domains or add and delete services on their domain name. It appears the company submits all these services at once (via batch job). This in turn seems to bog down the local cluster.

There could be more I could say, but I want to go spank my monkey. - Chad , posted 05/13/05

not bad
pretty good hosts, but they have some funky stuff going on with how they run the control panel which might irk powerusers, but for most people it shouldn't be a problem. The fact that they just doubled the bandwidth on all of their accounts, new and exisiting, is pretty nice. - Tom , posted 12/15/04
