mindfulness in movement
Chestnut Pilates is a beautiful second-floor studio in the SF Marina, across from the park and library on Chestnut at Webster. It's spacious, sunny and inspiring to work out in, plus it's fun to watch the endless parade of people, dogs and strollers going by...
I have been teaching Pilates for going on 20 years now! I originally trained with Mary Bowen, one of Joseph Pilates' longtime students in New York and worked in her studio for 8 years. Since then I've studied with various teachers on the West Coast and am a senior trainer at A Body of Work in the Presidio. I recently also became certified in Gyrotonic, which is a fantastically fluid and delicious movement system developed by Julio Horvath, a former ballet dancer and yogi. I teach on both Pilates and Gyrotonic equipment and find that the two methods complement each other beautifully. Pilates is great for strengthening the core musculature and targeting specific areas for toning and flexibility. It is also highly effective in rehabilitating injuries, healing chronic back pain and correcting postural problems. Gyrotonic, on the other hand, while also deeply strengthening, is more whole-body, flowing and spirallic movement. It feels a lot like dancing - very energizing and fun!
I have an extensive background in somatic movement disciplines - as well as having been a professional dancer / teacher for many years, I am also a certified practitioner of Body-Mind
