trendy coffeehouse/gallery/bar
I liked the eclecticness of the setup--you could have a beer, a sandwich or a cup of their hot chocolate, which is really more like a hot pudding. I first went there in search of a dense hot chocolate, and was a little disappointed by the drink (which didn't have the rich dark chocolate kick that I was hoping for), but we caught a stand up comedy act that happened to be going on at the same time so that was fun. And if the conversation isn't flowing, you can always check out the exhibit they have up in the gallery section. - Ruthy , posted 02/01/06

Full bar makes for good art talk...still a little fartsy
Nice place if your buzzed...food creative but unsuccessful. Art quality has consistently gotten better...If you have the latest and thinnest computer this is the place to give it a proper runway show. They have Jaegermeister...which is a catalyst for art viewing with extended lower jaw. - dabin , posted 11/14/05

Great Jazz Bands
I like the atmosphere and there are some great jazz vocalists and bands performing there. It's a nice place to just hang out. However, the food is not that great. Have a drink instead. - Unsubscribed , posted 06/23/05

"sub standard"
The art gallery cum cafe idea doesn't work in this situation, as the art work is often really bad, and the coffee consistently terrible. I find it a really awkward and uncomfortable place to be in. - Quan , posted 06/06/05

Entertaining low key lounge, local art, coffee shop
Excellent place to meet for groups. I love the art around the place. Events there vary at this location so noise volume is dependent on that activity. Weekends are packed so it's definitely not ideal to go to lounge at times. They do have local art & crafts fair. Parking is tolerable. Access to the muni is easy. My favorite drink to get there is their Chai Latt? - yummy! Wi-Fi access. - pengrin™ , posted 05/19/05

I really WANT to like this place, but I just can't. The space is great, concept is cool, but the food and munchies expensive and mediocre, espresso terrible, staff is often rude. Just don't enjoy being there. - Isaac , posted 03/09/05

Great lunch spot
Fun place to hang out, especially if you are a wifi junkie. Can get busy at weekends. Panini's and Salads are good. - Michelle , posted 12/15/04

Great place to spend the day working and the evening socializing
Nice atmosphere, free wi-fi, good food (but a little expensive for a cafe). Art varies in style and taste, with a focus on local artists and "street style". Lite on landscapes with deer and mist (thankfully). Always something going on in the evening....if you are working there be ready for the shift from workplace to lounge around 6.30pm. - Elizabeth , posted 10/20/04

Great cafe with lots to offer
This is a cafe with good (though pricey) sandwiches, salads, pasta, desserts, and even alcohol (wine and beer). They used to offer free wi-fi, which drew in a lot of people. But they stopped it for some reason (maybe because those people took up a lot of seats and didn't order much food). There are events on some nights, like live jazz every Sunday night (which is awesome!). Occasionally, I'll see people get picked up here (usually single attractive girls, of course), so expect a bit of that. - Mike , posted 10/19/04

Best cafe/bar/art gallery all in one!!
This is my favorite place in San Francisco. It's a cafe that's an art gallery, that also serves food and drink, and has both live music and DJs on special nights. Come to their last-Thursday-of-the-month art reception, sip wine, and view art by up-and-coming local artists. There's nothing else like it in SF! - Kalista , posted 10/19/04

Nice cafe with real diversity
This cafe is great because you'll get people chatting with friends, looking at art, or studying. They will often host live bands too. I love looking at the art throughout the cafe. Unfortunately, the Canvas cafe isn't exactly a hidden treasure. Everyone knows about it, so it gets pretty crowded. - Joan , posted 10/18/04

best ambiance: gallery / cafe
Canvas is very special: the tall windows looking out at Golden Gate park, high ceilings, cozy fireplace with couches and lounge areas, gallery art space, yummy pastries and rich coffee... It's a great place to study or meet a friend. - Elizabeth , posted 10/18/04

Nice place to hang out and people watch
It's a good place to just hang out, read a book, people watch. The art selection changes frequently and it's a nice way to take a little break.

They make a good toasted cheese and tomato sandwich too! - Lisa , posted 10/17/04
