Best Place Eat Din Din and see indie bands!
I've been going to Du Nord probably 3 times a month since I moved here way back in '96. This place is legendary for being the venue where bands who are on the verge of hitting indie stardom get a break. Whether it was Brian Jonestown Massacre or Oranger....every hipster band of note has played here. Plus the food is tasty if you're on a date you'd like to impress. - Bonnie , posted 12/23/04

Staff rudeness ruins cafe du nord. I refuse to go back.
I have been to cafe du nord several times - each times I have been repeatedly been asked to move my person by the staff. If you don't provide enough chairs for people to sit, then people will sit on the floor if it's a sitting kind of event. If there is something where people need to see, and you have people taking up all sorts of space with chairs and tables, then people will need to stand in a place where they can see. If you are going to be constantly asking people to move, then at least be nice about it. Also, I went on a storytelling evening and a woman was recounting her escape from jonestown and was very emotionally involved and vulnerable in telling her story the hosts cut her off mid-sentence so that there could be a 15 minute break for people to buy drinks. She did not get to finish her story (i.e. the reason we paid the cover to get into the place) and we did not further support the establishment paying for their drinks. Another time we waited over 2 hours for a show to start, and finally got bored and left, forfeiting our cover. Both my partner and I have sworn never to return to cafe du nord. - Anne , posted 11/03/04

best small club in SF
cafe du nord has consistently good bands, and is a bit of a throwback. you go downstairs and feel a bit like you are walking into a club from the 1940's. - char , posted 10/18/04

Good place to groove-eclectic acts
One of the few comfy clubs in SF. You can just relax and groove to the music without the noise and attitude. Good drinks too! - Unsubscribed , posted 09/01/04

Quality live music, local and national acts
Cafe Du Nord is a nightclub, restaurant and live music venue located in the landmark Swedish-American building in the Upper Market district of San Francisco. Built in 1907, it has maintained its Victorian period interiors, featuring the original faux decorated paneling and wainscoting, and a forty-foot hand carved mahogany bar. Details throughout the club hearken back to its past life as a notorious speakeasy during Prohibition. The rich red walls and dark wood interior create the perfect environment to enjoy classic cocktails and the most eclectic live music in town -- seven nights a week. - Victor , posted 08/31/04
