Best Pet Adoption Center
My Angels told me "Get a cat--you need a cuddly pet!" So, after reading a good Everything About Cats book, which recommended Shelters or Good Catteries or Private Homes, instead of Pet Shops, I did a Net search, and found Berkeley East-Bay Humane Society. For ONLY $100 per cat, or $125 per dog, you get solid pet advice, all the shots, spay-neuter, and a free pet carrier! (Downside: it's a cardboard carrier, and it couldn't hold a 15-pound Maine Coon cat.... the handle broke!) I noticed the cattery was very clean, the cats all looked happy, and healthy, although some looked a bit weary. (Shelter life, ya know). The dogs looked exercised, tamed, and all the doggie doo was picked-up. They work extensively to socialize all the animals there, and let the cats out of their cages now and then for gentle exercise and socializing. All the animals had a name, photo, and bio sheet as to personality, and did they get along well with other animals or kids, or did they have a disease like FIV? They sell some high-quality cat and dog food, there, too, and a few toys and collars, etc. I went to PetCo mostly, for the full line of supplies. However, it's good to donate money to BEHS, too! They are the ONLY no-kill shelter in the Bay Area. This means NO unadopted animals EVER get euthanized. I hear that happens at other, overcrowded shelters, where the cute fuzzy kittens go fast and older animals are sometimes put to sleep 'cause nobody shows up to adopt them. Sad! I'm SO glad that Biff (who's got FIV) made it to BEHS. I think of him as "the Guru-Cat". However, Biff told me he was not "the cat" for me..... but "the cat" for me picked me.... (Cat lovers have it that THE CAT PICKS YOU!)
