How to enjoy a hair cut
Admittedly, there is not much in Hayward to recommend. The downtown is constantly trying to upgrade itself by the existence of the adult movie store and the plethora of second hand shops hinders it too much. And yet, hidden amidst these shops is "Barber Joe". He cut your father's hair and your grandfather's hair as well. He has one chair in his shop and if you are fortunate enough to get to sit in it, you are in for a treat.
A warning, do not go to this shop if you are in a rush. The whole point is to be entertained while you get your hair cut. I have been regaled with tales of Barber Joe's deck, wine atrium, and entry gate that he built in his back yard, his forays into making his own canes, his Pugs, riding his bike from Russell City (West Hayward) to Castro Valley in the 40's, and just about anything else. The last I went there, I mentioned my recent rafting trip down the Tuolumne. He pulled out a picture of his last fishing trip there.
His prices are remarkable, in that it is uncommon to get such a high quality hair cut for so little. The only drawback you might encounter is that he is only open Tuesday through Thursday, 9 to 6 or so. It's well worth reorganizing your schedule to get there.
