Incomparable Hula, Chanting from Academy of Hawaiian Arts
The San Francisco Bay Area has a number of outstanding kumu hula (hula teachers) and halau (schools and perormance troops). But Kumu Hula Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu is a stand out guy even in this community of exceptionally talented people. He and his dancers recently performed at the San Francisco Aloha Festival (August) and it was the most joyful, mana-filled, collaboration I have ever witnessed. Mark's voice is filled with his soaring soul, and his dancers lift up their own souls and voices in turn, and together they ignite a synergistic celebration of hula that should be experienced by every sentient being at least once in a lifetime. You cannot understand how powerful this is until you experience it yourself.

A new performance is coming up, details below. Go, be there, absorb the amazing energy and combined voice of this incredible group of people.

`ALUA

The Academy of Hawaiian Arts, led by Artistic Director and
Kumu Hula (master teacher), Mark Keali`I Ho`omalu, will
present its distinct brand of ancient hula at their second
annual production, `Alua.

Promising to be a visual and aural feast, this award-winning
team of dancers will perform Ho`omalu's latest works while
accompanied by his signature style of chanting and mesmerizing
native percussion. Ho`omalu's distinct sound sets him apart
as an innovative and unique voice in World Music.

Don't miss this rare performance by Kumu Mark and the Academy!

Also performing, the M?kaha Sons!

For 29 years, the M?kaha Sons have played traditional Hawaiian
music in Hawai`i and around the world. Considered one of
Hawai`i's foremost musical groups, M?kaha Sons have released
over twenty albums and have won numerous N? Hoku Hanohano Awards
(Hawai`i's version of the Grammys). Band members Louis "Moon"
Kauakahi, John and Jerome Koko are renowned for their unique style
of harmonies and lively stage performances.

Don't miss this opportunity to see The Sons in Northern
California!
