Not your ordinary graphic novel
This was actually my first exposure to Phoebe Gloeckner. I found the title in a list of books that had been banned from libraries. It was in good company with Judy Blume's "Forever" and "Naked Lunch". I usually like to check out banned books; many times they are banned for being too good.

And that was the case with this one as well. Ms. Gloeckner's web site has an excerpt that just made we want more. Written before "The Diary of a Teenage Girl", it covers a few of the same stories graphically and really makes them come alive. Again, R. Crumb praises it highly, which is another reason I decided to check it out based on the web sample.

If you had a dysfunctional childhood, and want to see someone put those feelings and issues down on paper, I suggest you try this. It's not all pretty, but it's all very realistic. - Unsubscribed , posted 06/27/05
