Shinty practice – a Scottish stick and ball sport
Come out Tuesday evening and try your hand at shinty, one of the oldest sports in the world.
Shinty (camanachd in modern Gaelic) is about two teams of players striking a small leather ball with a curved stick, known as a caman. Comparisons have been made to field hockey, but in shinty a player is allowed to play the ball in the air and use both sides of the sticks. The ball does fly through the air quite often.
Several players on our club have come from field or ice hockey backgrounds, while a couple had never before played organized sports. We have a wide range of age and skill level on the squad, and all teams are coed.
We also traditionally grab a round of pints at the nearest pub after practice!
