Family Violence Law Center (FVLC) seeks to end family violence in Alameda County by providing legal, counseling, and support for survivors of domestic violence, conducting prevention education to change individual and community perceptions about relationship abuse, and advocating for change within the legal, health, education, and criminal justice systems.
POSITION: Domestic Violence Victim Advocate
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Family Violence Intervention Unit Supervisor, the Domestic Violence Advocate works with victims of domestic violence to provide emotional support, assistance navigating the criminal justice system and linkages to other social services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain Caseload of 30 Domestic Violence Clients
* Contact victims identified from domestic violence police reports to offer support and assistance.
* Provide immediate crisis intervention and safety planning for families in domestic violence situations.
* Link clients directly to other FVLC services as needed, including conducting legal intake as appropriate.
* Provide advocacy within the criminal justice system by working closely with police investigators and the District Attorney’s office.
* Provide court accompaniment, support in the justice system, and referrals to other social service agencies as needed by client.
Police Training and Community Outreach
* Provide regular trainings to police officers on the dynamics of domestic violence dynamics, types of restraining orders and legal protections, and FVLC services.
* Pursue opportunities for conducting community outreach and providing educational presentations to targeted communities.
Participate as Member of FVIU Team
* Attend and actively participate in regularly scheduled team meetings.
* Work closely with collaborative partners including the police department and social service agencies.
Other:
* Maintain data on client contacts, case information, program assessment and officer training needs.
* Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
* Bachelor’s Degree in social work, psychology, or a related field OR at least two years related experience.
* Basic understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence.
* Ability to relate well with people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
* Ability to work independently and with a team.
* Valid California driver’s license.
* Criminal background check (provided upon hire).
* CA Domestic Violence Counselor Certification (can be provided upon hire).
PREFERRED QUALITIES:
* Previous experience in crisis intervention.
* Previous experience working with police departments, and/or understanding of the criminal justice system.
* Demonstrated presentation skills and comfort speaking in front of groups.
* Interest in women’s and domestic violence issues.
* Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese or Vietnamese.
CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, full-time.
COMPENSATION: Starting range is $31,000 - $37,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, flexible spending account, generous vacation plan.
