The jewel in the crown of the North Bay dance scene returns to Grace Pavilion this June 7th. From house music to breakbeats and conscious hip hop to world music there is once again something for late night beat seekers of all persuasions. And yet with a line up of six varied dance DJs and live acts there is more than great music to grace attendees: There is vibe, tribe and ambiance. All night performers spin, twirl and swirl overhead as contrails of fire and pixels dominate your mindscape in a visual festooning of walls, chillspaces, stages and more! The stage itself is virtually set alight with ballet-point fire troupe Luminesque along with the wildly creative contortions and theatrical antics of trapeze-jacking, side-show stealing hooligans Vau de Vire. There is also live painting by Alex Grey, hula hoping, massage, art installations and vendors to complete the immersion.
The evening begins when the first note is cracked and DJ Dragonfly rolls out a carpet of chilled out funky grooves, thereby setting the beginnings of all-night bodies in motion.
The late night love affair continues into the evening as Bay Area rising stars Boulevard mack up the floor with a bumpin' repartee of live-meets-electronica. Featuring drums, guitar, keys, samplers and MC SoulEye, the music is the sounds of organic live performance, at the intersection of breakbeat and house.
Following suite and nicing up the night is turntablist, groove jockey and producer RJD2. His sets are a vinyl lockdown of original tunes that delivers a filigree of textured groove over a density of bass: Subsonic frequencies kiss the sweet spot and send a nod to the ensuing at-the-ready, righteous rough-up of groove-meets-skills.
Next up is the collective wisdom of Heavyweight Dub Champion and the unified message of MCs and vocalists A.P.O.S.T.L.E., Stero Lion and Jillian Ann; plus the analogue voice of beatsmiths Patch, Totter and Grant. Bassbins forge new identities through merging the nu skool ethos of conscious hip hop with an old skool inflection. Tweaky, glitchy, rubbery and truly original, these guys will leave you in the clutch and drop you in the moment.
This year also celebrates the return of producer and DJ Freq Nasty. His original barnstorming reggae and dubwise breakbeats are the daredevilishly bombastic sonic sleights of hand that'll bust the crusts of the most stalwart and stubborn dance floor naysayers!
And at the final helm of this magic carpet ride of an evening is Cheb I Sabbah, The Godfather of the world music scene, who turns speaker cabinets into an Aladdin's cave of mystic gems. Expect your descent to Earth to be eased with trans-global grooves that lusciously hold fast with persuasive grip and tuck you in to bliss.
