I'll be moving in August as my housemates are leaving the area for grad school and jobs elsewhere. I'm a considerate housemate—I don't make much noise when I'm at home, I keep the common areas pretty clean and neat, and I'm friendly and have good boundaries. I'm a responsible tenant—I've lived in my current place for two years, and the landfamily will tell you I've paid my rent on time every month and generally been a great tenant. I'm 29, white, queer, a guy, and have a graduate degree and steady work. I can start August 1st or as late as August 15, or even earlier if the situation seems to warrant it.
I'm open to:
1) a tidy shared house with a peaceful, communicative, non-dramatastic atmosphere
2) a studio cottage or inlaw (tiny is fine, so long as it has a toilet and shower)
3) sharing a comfortable live-work workshop with a roll-up door (I'm thinking of a project I want to work on in the next year, but I'm not committed to it yet)
4) a work exchange for someone needing an attendant/caregiver, cook, or help in the house or garden (not childcare)
5) Something else—You've got an opening in your co-op? You have a tiny house on wheels in your backyard you want to rent out? You need a long-term caretaker for your urban farm or B&B? Let's talk.
Miscellany
I have a little furniture—a full bed, a couple of dressers, a table and a tiny desk. Some of this can be gotten rid of if need be.
I like to garden and grow vegetables and herbs, and would love to start or contribute to a garden. Will also happily help out with your chickens and/or worm compost.
I need my room, at least, to be a furry-critter-free space, because of allergies.
I don't smoke or do drugs. I'm fine with folks who use pot occasionally and outdoors, but not comfortable with a lot of alcohol, smoking in the house, or any harder drugs.
I would like to be in proximity to BART with a walk to and from BART that feels safe and pleasant for me. I've been looking in the South Berkeley/North Oakland/Rockridge/Elmwood region the most; Kensington, Albany, and El Cerrito also good options.
I want to spend between $600-700 a month. Slightly more for something really ideal.
I want to live with housemates who are very energy, water, and recycling conscious.
I'm queer, and want to live someplace where queerness is at least not cause for raised eyebrows. I also have a low tolerance for racism, sexism, and other isms.
I have experience in co-ops. I prefer situations where we can communicate our needs as they arise rather than saving it up for a dramatastic house meeting, but if you've got a functional chore wheel and house meeting system set up, that's great too.
Speaking of chore wheels, I like sweeping and mopping, and cleaning bathrooms is no problem. I much prefer keeping a kitchen where everyone does our own dishes as they happen rather than letting them pile up.
I like to cook for people. I am an occasional and flexible carnivore; I can follow the rules of a vegetarian/kosher/halal kitchen and eat meat/treif/haram food somewhere else if need be.
I'm not in the habit of calling myself a "spiritual person", but I have a practice that helps me improve myself and keep getting better at living in the world. It's not necessary, but it would be great to live with other people who are also engaged in some kind of practice. That would help support me in what I'm doing in my own life.
Ideally I'd like to find a situation that feels right for the long term.
Finally, as a thank you for reading this long post, here is a cute photo of a nudibranch.
