Root Division in partnership with Rhodes &amp; Fletcher, LLC present
a Spare Change Artist Space exhibition:

REVISED INHERITANCE
Work by Brooke Westfall
Curated by Amy Cancelmo, Root Division
Artist Reception: Thursday, May 23rd at 5:30pm

Westfall creates her work on paper by utilizing storybook illustrations and coloring book structures to showcase the psychological and sociocultural effects of family dynamics. These paintings are mostly influenced by eastern miniature paintings and illuminated manuscripts. With such influences, she creates her work by including intricately dense patterns and inviting details only to mask the often disturbing and violent nature of the underlying narrative.

“Revised Inheritance” features a new series of painstakingly detailed renderings of paper artifacts. “They are mostly pieces of paper I found while helping my family organize and settle my grandmother’s estate,” explains Westfall. A certificate of baptism, a marriage license, newspaper clippings, and store receipts are some of the startlingly realistic documents rendered in the series through watercolor and ink.

In 100 Acts of Sewing, Sonya Philip explores making versus manufacturing. This personal challenge to sew one hundred dresses in a year, also aims to reacquaint people with the skills required to make clothing. Learn to sew your own dress, starting with a simple, sleeveless A-line shift. The neck and armholes are finished with a simple bias tape facing and pockets add flair and utility. In this class students will learn how to cut pattern pieces, finish seams, make bias tape, and top stitch patch pockets. The pattern, in six sizes, will be provided. This is not a beginning sewing class, you will need to have some previous experience using a sewing machine.

Sonya Philip has always made things. It's the way things were done in her family. Both parents encouraged her to truly look at things and instilled a love for the handmade. Sonya studied art and printmaking in high school with every intention of going to art school. Life intervened, as did other areas of fascination, eventually leading to an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College. As a self-taught artist, she enjoys the freedom of exploring and stretching mediums. Sonya lives in San Francisco with her family. www.sonyaphilip.com

Noted for its delicate color and expressive, painterly characteristic, gum bichromate printing offers the artist unique possibilities because of its flexibility. It may be used as a simple photogram, a complicated multilayered print, or combined with other alternative processes. Students will begin by learning how to make digital enlarged negatives and end with creating finished prints from their own images. On the way, they will learn safe, correct protocols. Depending on the complexity of their images, students will leave with 2-3 finished prints.

Mary K. Shisler works in the alternative processes as well as producing beautiful large format prints of botanical subjects. She explores her topics with scanners, plastic cameras and mobile digital devices. She creates jewelry as well. She holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Costume Design from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Her art is shown internationally. Most recently her piece APHRODITE WALKS has been featured in WOMAN + BODY, a show in Seoul, Korea. Her website is marykshisler.com

Collagraph is an amazingly versatile printmaking process, based on the construction of a collaged matrix to provide a printable plate. A wide range of materials and textured surfaces such as fabric, leaves, sand and other found materials can be used in the plate-making process. Plates can be printed as intaglio or relief images, or as combinations of the two, leading to prints of astounding richness and strength.

This intriguing process creates a wide array of different effects and the use of diverse materials gives great variation in texture. The result is often unpredictable, rewarding the artist with an inspirational surprise. No prerequisite required. All levels are welcome. Enrollment is limited to 10 students.

Color has historically been used as a descriptive, evocative and phenomenological element in visual art. A parallel history exists of color as an industrial product, used to predict fashion and decor trends or to effect phycological states. Industrial printing processes and digital technologies codify and granulate color into a standardized vocabulary. This class will examine color as a readymade. Through lectures, exercises and short projects we will look at artists who appropriate color and develop student?s ability to utilize this strategy in their own practice.

Unlike working with line-based imagery and flat shapes, this workshop will focus strictly on halftone screens and process color printing. This technique is primarily used in the offset industry, but translates to the medium of fine art Screenprinting. For high volume full-color editions this method can be more economical than other mediums, plus it has a unique aesthetic of it’s own. Students will learn how to properly prepare film work in Photoshop including splitting channels, creating custom halftones and properly adjust tonal ranges for this specific process. This workshop will also cover all aspects of screen and ink preparation plus edition printing.

Cellist and sampling virtuoso performs as part of museum’s next adults-only event

The Exploratorium’s first Thursday session of After Dark returns June 6, 2013 with a special music- and art-focused evening featuring performances by acclaimed cellist Zoë Keating and art installations by visiting artists and artworks from the Exploratorium collection. Operating as a one-woman orchestra, Keating uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of sound in real time - resulting in intricate and breathtaking music that has been delighting audiences since she began improvising for late night crowds in her San Francisco warehouse in her 20s.

Keating is known for both her use of technology - which she uses to sample her cello onstage - and for her DIY ethic which has resulted in the sale of over 60,000 copies of her self-released albums and a devoted social media following.

After Dark is every Thursday evening from 6-10pm for adults ages 18 and up. On the first Thursday of each month After Dark features expanded programming or a special theme.

After Dark is an adult program on Thursday evenings at the Exploratorium that mixes cocktails, conversation and adult-oriented programming in science and the arts. On the first Thursday of each month After Dark showcases a different theme, which might include live performances, films and new media, or feature cutting-edge technology and unexpected extravaganzas.

Programs are playful, eclectic, and content-rich, exploring the science behind topics of adult interest from gambling, alcohol, fashion and sex to extreme sports and gaming. Upcoming After Dark themes include Boom, Freestyle, Decay, and Glow. One part theater, one part cabaret, one part gallery and one part Happy Hour, After Dark is a unique way to experience one of San Francisco’s most beloved museums. After Dark is for adults 18 years and older. Tickets are $15; $10 for members.

 <div style="margin-bottom: 1em;">
19 Broadway in Fairfax presents: Afrofunk Experience &amp; Afrolicious Live band!
2 of the hottest bands in the SF Bay Area go head to head for one night only in Marin county!
Afrolicious

Afrolicious is San Francisco based collective who perform live with a ten piece band and also as a dj duo with live percussionists and MCs. www.afrolicious.org twitter.com/afroliciousfunk for bookings contact: afroliciousoriginal@gmail.com f
Biography
Afrolicious has established itself as both one of the most legendary weekly parties in San Francisco, and of the top live/electronic bands on the scene. Started as a weekly dance party featuring DJ's and brothers Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz alongside percussionists, MC's and horn players, and an amazing crowd from day one. Over the years it has evolved as founding DJ/Producer Pleausremaker (Joe McGuire) alongside brother Señor Oz (Oz McGuire) hooked up with some of the most exciting personalities in the Bay Area music scene and started writing original music under the alias Afrolicious. Around 2010 the live Pleasuremaker band started including some of this new 'Afrolicious' material and added more of the percussionists and vocalists from the weekly party to form what is now the Afrolicious band. Between their weekly party and sound system shows that involve the brothers DJing alongside live percussion, they also have a 8-12 piece live band that emphasizes the organic elements, instrumentation, and energy of a live ensemble combined with club heavy beats and textures the weekly party has come to be known for.

Afrofunk Experience

The Afrofunk Experience " An ambrosial mix of musical interpretations influenced by the African diaspora, created in a collective and organic manner"-AFE
Biography
The Afrofunk Experience – HOMEGROWN AFROBEAT, AFROROCK, REGGAE, AND ORIGINAL BAY AREA FUNK.

The Afrofunk Experience – who with Sila Mutungi comprised the award-winning group Sila and the Afrofunk Experience from it's inception until 2010, providing songs and grooves for the entity that was dubbed "The Bay Area's Dance Kings", and who, with SAFE, were winners of the NAACP Image Award's Outstanding World Music Album for "Black President" and winners of The SF Weekly Music Award's Best International Act.

In 2009 the Afrofunk Experience parted ways with Sila.

The Afrofunk Experience – Putting the FUNK back in it!

The Afrofunk Experience – AFE for short.

The Musicians:

Guitarist/Singer David James (Spearhead, The Coup, Beth Custer) brings his sinewy style to counter the funk-metal stylings of lead guitarist Ken House (H.P. Riot). The precise funk-rock drumming of Paul Oliphant (Afrolicious, Will Magid Trio) with Wendell Rand's (Afrolicious, Tracorum, Youssoupha Sidibe) muscular dance grooves keep the band tight, while saxophonist David Boyce (Broun Fellinis, The Supplicants) and trombonist Alan Williams (Manicato, Katdelic) wail, their horns producing a sound that encompasses classic reggae, afrobeat and R&amp;B. Percussionist B. Lee thickens and adds flavor to the mix, and on top of all this, recent addition Sandy House adds her sultry voice and powerful stage presence.

Note: There once was a man named Mike Pitre ... he was the coolest cat, with the craziest degree of swing, in his trumpet playing, in his singing and in his living. Mike passed away just weeks after he recorded his parts for the AFE album. He would cuss the band out if they were to quit. So they roll on. And they miss him.

Afrofunk Experience – Never Be The Same, the album, available January 2013.

 FELLOWSHIP AWARDS

The Kala Fellowship, an international competition, annually grants nine artists a cash award, unlimited access to Kala’s facilities for up to six months, and a culminating show in the Kala Gallery, through a highly competitive jurying process. The Fellowship Award is geared towards supporting artists in completing specific projects or bodies of work that would benefit from Kala's specialized equipment. This year Kala reserved one of the nine awards for an artist working in the discipline of Social Practice. Another of the nine awards is designated for a California artist living outside of a main metropolitan area with funding provided by The James Irvine Foundation. Hosting nine new artists at Kala each year helps to ensure that the artistic energy and vision of Kala’s entire community of artists in residence is continually re-energized and rejuvenated.

The application deadline for the 2013 Fellowship award is Friday, May 24, 2013.

The 2013 Fellowship competition will be juried by Kala's Directors and an anonymous panel that includes one fellowship alumni artist, and one invited Bay Area arts professional. The online application will be posted by March 2013. Please check back here for more infromation.
