Andaz

A night of Bhangra, Bollywood and Desi Beats

with your hosts DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid.

DJ Anjali returns from a month in India in time for the February
installment of Andaz; loaded with musical finds to share with the
Portland dance massive.

www.anjaliandthekid.com

Andaz is Portland's longest-running monthly dance party, now in its
eighth year of amazing parties at the Fez Ballroom.
Andaz is Portland's most successful party not dedicated to retro
music. Andaz is Portland's original Bhangra and Bollywood party.

9pm to 3am

Portland, OR 97205

DJ ANJALI & THE INCREDIBLE KID BIOGRAPHY

DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid have played a transformative role in
the Portland, Oregon club scene for nearly a decade, presiding over
two of Portland’s longest-running and most successful dance parties,
as well as hosting a one-of-a-kind radio show on KBOO community radio.
They are most known for incinerating dance floors with the South Asian
sounds of Bhangra and Bollywood, but the duo scours the globe for any
hard-hitting music that combines local musical traditions with
window-rattling production. After making a name for themselves in
their hometown’s raucous house party circuit, DJ Anjali & The
Incredible Kid introduced the Portland, Oregon nightclub scene to the
sounds of Bhangra and Bollywood on New Year’s Eve 2000. After a series
of residencies, beginning with a six month residency at the legendary
Blackbird, the duo began hosting sold out ANDAZ dance parties, which
found a permanent home at the Fez Ballroom in the Fall of 2002. For
seven years DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid have packed the dance
floor at the Fez the last weekend of every month, selling out on a
regular basis. The focus of these parties remains hardcore Panjabi
Bhangra and the latest electronic confections from the Bollywood film
industry.

In order to share more of their musical passions they founded the
popular monthly ATLAS (with co-host/DJ E3) at Holocene in November of
2003. The ATLAS parties provide a forum for the duo to feature other
sounds in their repertoire including: UK Asian Garage and Drum’n’Bass,
Middle-Eastern electronica, Balkan Beats, Kuduro, Reggaeton and
international Hip-hop. Since introducing Portland club audiences to
the amazing sounds of the South Asian diaspora and more the duo have
remained in constant demand playing any number of one-off events
nearly every weekend of the year in addition to their regular parties.
The duo barnstormed New York in December of 2004 when they were flown
out to headline a sold-out party at NYC’s oldest and best Bhangra
party: Basement Bhangra, where Anjali has returned to play several
times. In the Fall of 2005 Anjali and The Kid began their long
association with KBOO community radio, where they currently host a
weekly radio show every Tuesday evening. In January of 2007 Anjali and
the Kid headlined the opening night party of the Vancouver
International Bhangra Celebration in Vancouver, British Columbia, and
in August of 2009 they performed at the opening night party of the
Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Together and separately they have
supported artists as diverse as Digable Planets, Balkan Beat Box, Pink
Martini, The Decemberists, DJ Spooky, Tigerstyle, Boban i Marco
Markovic Orkestar, State of Bengal, Karsh Kale, DJ Rekha, Antibalas,
Dengue Fever, Quasi, Explode Into Colors, Extra Golden, Maga Bo, Ming
& FS, Joro-Boro,
J-Boogie, and Nickodemus from Turntables on the Hudson.

Hey,

The title comes from Portland Mercury's story last week. A meeting is scheduled for Monday February 8th at 6 PM at the Acadia Ballroom located at 1829 NE Alberta. The meting is organized by Mayor Sam Adams and Commissioner Amanda Fritz. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the viability of Last Thursday. It is not a foregone conclusion that Last Thursday will remain the quirky event we have gotten used to and sometimes take for granted.

Over the past two years there have been approximately ten public meetings discussing Last Thursday. A handful of neighbors have attended these meetings. Most of those neighbors would like to see the event ended or at least radically changed. Very few neighbors or interested parties have attended the meetings in support of the event.

We are now at a cross road. If the event is to be saved we need to let our elected officials know how we feel. Sam Adams can be reached at sam.adams@ci.portland.or.us . Amanda Fritz can be reached at Amanda@ci.portland.or.us The February 8th meeting is likely to be well attended by people that would like to close down the event. It would be great if you could attend to show support for keeping the event going.

Below is a copy of our 2009 plan. We don’t expect that the 2010 plan will be much different.

Hope to see you next Monday,

2009 Plan

Draft, July 2009

Our Vision

After a humble beginning more than a decade ago, Last Thursday has become an iconic event, attracting ever-increasing crowds in the summer months. As the event has evolved and the number of attendees grown, a halo of related problems has widened too.

In the spirit of making this an event everyone can enjoy—neighbors and participants alike—we have formed a nonprofit, Team Last Thursday. Our goal is to mitigate some of the problems that have emerged, while preserving and fostering the unique culture that is its lifeblood.

We believe Last Thursday should evolve on its own, with spontaneous street performances and time-based-art. But, we recognize that there is a need to establish infrastructure now so that the event can sustain itself in the future.

Our Plan

Street Closure

Now that we are able to close Alberta Street to car traffic from 7-10pm, we have drafted a plan—which will be modified as needed—to ensure it stays this way.

· We will divert cars off Alberta right at 7pm.

· We will erect Type III barricades on NE 15th, 27th and 30th.

· Volunteers will help drivers who need to get off Alberta after 7pm.

· We will reopen Alberta to car traffic right at 10pm. We will reopen the street and officially end the event with a parade starting at NE 15th.

Bus Rerouting

· Tri-Met will continue to reroute the #72 bus between NE 30th and Killingsworth and MLK Blvd and Alberta during the event.

· We will post bus rerouting notifications at all affected bus stops.

Street Parking on Alberta

· We will post “No Parking” signs on Alberta the day before the event.

· We will leave flyers on windshields, requesting that vehicle owners not park on Alberta during future events. Repeat offenders will be towed.

Barricades

· We will have barricades manufactured specifically for the event that comply with the City’s requirements.

· We will erect Type I barricades on all side streets and Type III barricades on NE 15th, 27th and 30th, in accordance with the traffic plan approved by the City.

Porta-Potties

· We will place 12 porta-potties at strategic locations on Alberta Street.

Trash Removal

· We will place 40 trash cans on Alberta Street during the event.

· We will remove the cans Friday morning by 9am, or as soon as feasible.

· We will scout Alberta and all side streets between NE 15th and 30th and Wygant and Sumner for trash.

· We will strive to have all trash picked up by noon on Friday.

Open containers

· The event has a zero tolerance policy towards open containers. Anyone found with an open container will be asked by a volunteer to immediately pour out the content of the container and to properly dispose of the empty container. The police will cite offenders.

Food Vendors

· Volunteers will verify that each food vendor has a current license from the Health Department. If a vendor can not comply, we will give him/her information on how to apply for a license and ask him/her to leave the event.

Amplified Music

· We will ask bands and DJs playing amplified music to stop playing it. Violators will be cited with noise violations, in accordance with the City’s noise policy.

Vendor Registration, Fees & Rules

Our goal is to make Last Thursday an art event that is family-friendly, rather than a flea market.

· We will update vendor rules monthly or as needed.

· Corporate vendors will be prohibited to participate in Last Thursday.

· Art vendors will not be charged to attend the event, nor will we will ask them to register.

· We are currently developing a plan to limit “flea market” vendors.

· We will discourage vendors from selling drug paraphenalia and glass pipes that can be used for smoking weed.

Acoustic Music & Performance Art

· We will encourage and promote acoustic music and time-based performance art.

Volunteers

· We will build and train a group of volunteers who will be responsible for monitoring the event as much as possible.

· Our initial plan is to train 20 volunteers, but we plan to increase that number to as many as 50 over time.

Public Urination

We are currently developing a plan to stop public urination. At this time, we have agreed to the following action items:

· We will lock up the porta-potties later in the evening.

· Volunteers will man the side streets as people are leaving the event, reminding them that the porta-potties are still available and discouraging them from relieving themselves in the neighborhood.

· We will provide all volunteers with flashlights so they can shine a light on anyone who may be urinating in public.

Public Forums

· We will hold three public forums in 2009:

– May (completed)

– July 21st, 6:30pm, Acadian Ballroom at 1829 NE Alberta

– August or September

Website

· We have started building a website to invite public comment. Visitors will be able to participate in public forums and leave feedback. The URL is www.LastThursdayPDX.ning.com.

American borders. Hosted by the crew that first introduced the
Portland club audience to genres such as 2step, Balkan Beats, Bhangra,
Dubstep, Urban Desi, Funk Carioca, Kuduro, Mambo, Rai’n'B, Reggada and
Reggaeton. Atlas is THE Portland club night dedicated to exposing the

E3 BIOGRAPHY

http://www.myspace.com/dj_e3

DJ E3 (Ezra Ereckson) is a veteran DJ, and as President of BSI Records
was an early advocate of an American dub sound, now flowering into
dubstep and other related genres. A core member of the pioneering
agit-dub band Systemwide (Portland) and experimental sound system
Bucolic (San Francisco) through the '90s, E3 has been DJing for over a
decade. Collecting vinyl since '83, past residencies such as Deeper
Roots and Bassism in the early '00s cemented his rep as a sonic
tactician without boundaries, pushing the sounds of Africa, the Middle
East and the Caribbean at every tempo, from reggae and hip hop through
house, breaks, jungle and dub. A frequent guest at dubstep night
VARIOUS, E3's current residency is ATLAS, alongside DJs Anjali and The
Incredible Kid. Almost 6 years strong, ATLAS is Holocene's longest
running and best-attended night, the only party of its kind for hundreds
(if not thousands) of miles in any direction, bringing international heat to
the most diverse crowd in town.

THE INCREDIBLE KID BIOGRAPHY

www.theincrediblekid.com
http://www.myspace.com/theincrediblekid

Beginning with incorporating Asian Drum and Bass, Reggaeton, and
Meren-Rap songs into his late '90s house party sets, The Incredible
Kid built his reputation igniting Portland, Oregon dance floors with
the incendiary urban sounds of international dance music. In late 2000
The Kid introduced DJ Anjali to the dancing masses and the two
spearheaded the bhangra and Bollywood scene in Portland through their
Andaz night, Portland’s longest-running monthly party. The Incredible
Kid, Anjali and E3 initiated the international urban beats scene in
Portland when they co-founded the still-thriving club night Atlas in
November of 2003. Alongside DJ Anjali the Kid headlined a sold-out
night of “Basement Bhangra” in December of 2004 in NYC and headlined
the opening night of the 2007 Vancouver International Bhangra
Celebration in Vancouver, BC. Since 2005 The Incredible Kid and DJ
Anjali have hosted a wildly diverse show on KBOO, Portland's
long-running community radio station. The Incredible Kid has supported
Digable Planets, Boban Markovic Orkestar, State of Bengal, Tigerstyle,
DJ Rekha, DJ Spooky, Antibalas, Dengue Fever, J-Boogie, Karsh Kale, DJ
Collage, Alter-Echo, Maneesh and Ferhan of Dhamaal Sound System, Ming
and FS, Maga Bo, and Nickodemus from Turntables on the Hudson. He is
also featured in the Adidas Originals/XLR8R book “Bedroom Rockers.”

Conversations can change your life -
We’ve all had powerful conversations that changed our outlook on life, made us really laugh, or just moved us . . .

MEN’S MONTHLY SALON
February: Lust’s Double-Edged Sword -- How do erotic attractions heal & harm us?
2/7/10 (1st Sundays), 2:30-4:30 pm
$7 - $20 Sliding Scale
FREE for Manifest Members
Private home near Mt. Tabor

Each month a small group (8-15) of men gathers for an honest, open, powerful, and often funny discussion. We sit in the comfort of a living room and talk & listen about a subject we find interesting & important, such as sex, relationships, work, aging, or health. We explore collaboratively, learning from each other about ourselves and our fellows.

We rediscover the power of thoughtful collective inquiry. We remember that human beings are usually wiser when they learn & laugh together. And of course we stop for tasty snacks and tea –- because the brain and the heart both need sustenance.

FEBRUARY PRESENTER: Marc Andrews, is a senior psychotherapists focusing on a blend of deep inquiry and practical support, who has 20 years of clinical experience in Jungian Analysis, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Positive Psychology, Gestalt, Psychodynamic techniques, and who has a strong focus on gay men and HIV/AIDS. He also has 10 years' experience in clinical supervision with other psychotherapists.

FACILITATOR: David Zundel has organized and facilitated many events in Portland over the years. David brings a great interest in how we learn more from talking in small groups.

SPONSOR: donations benefit Manifest, a non-profit men’s community empowering diverse men in the Portland area to pursue their wellness visions & passions together in more than 50 events monthly; no one turned away for lack of funds; work-study available if you call in advance to schedule.
