On the first day of climate change negotiations in Copenhagen, join us at the world headquarters of Chevron in San Ramon to tell one of the world’s worst climate polluters “our climate is not your business!” We are going to Chevron’s headquarters demanding that they take the following steps to stop obstructing the urgent action that must be taken to confront climate change:
1.	Support equitable, science-based targets and climate solutions in international climate change negotiations and domestically.
2.	Pledge not to support any fake “grassroots” campaigns against national climate change legislation
3.	Cap the crude and stop expanding into heavier sources of crude oil.

The greening of our society has been under way for well over a decade and changing our language along the way. The rise of consumers becoming Eco-frugal or going for Eco-status by tuning into Eco-vertising leads the market and entrepreneurs to believe we've shifted from a 'fad' to fundamental changes to our lifestyle. Is that true or a bunch of green washing? The real question is whether the 'tipping point' has been reached in the greening of the American consumer and is their purchasing behavior mirroring their new found green values.

SF Choral Artists: Old Chestnuts, New Fire!

Sunday, December 13, 4:00pm-6:00pm, Oakland

MORE INFO: http://www.sfca.org

"Traditional December choral concerts, with their well-worn carols and holiday themes, can be great for lifting the spirits. But for concertgoers who want more than just another sing-along, San Francisco Choral Artists' upcoming program, "Old Chestnuts, New Fire!," offers a tantalizing alternative. Under Magen Solomon's direction, SFCA has assembled one of the holiday season's more distinctive repertories, combining a selection of audience/singer favorites with several newer works, two premieres and, yes, some Christmas carols - in performances Dec. 5 in Palo Alto, Dec. 12 in San Francisco, and Dec. 13 in Oakland." So wrote Joseph Sargent in a Preview article on sfcv.org.

The program includes Early Music by Byrd and Gesualdo, more contemporary works by Part, Biebl, Busto, Howells, and Tavener; favorites from among the Bay Area's own most well known composers - Maia Aprahamian, David Conte, Herb Bielawa, Roger Nixon, and Wayne Peterson; and sparkling world premieres by Composer-in-Residence Brian Holmes and Composer-Not-In-Residence, New Zealander Christopher Marshall.

Writes Sargent: "[Artistic Director] Solomon avidly cultivates engagements with local artists to help bridge the gulf between composer and performer... "I feel like music needs to be live music," Solomon comments. "It's so easy to listen to flawless recordings, but having live singers in front of live audiences singing music by living composers has always been a critical part of our group."

Come celebrate the season with this unusual concert.

"Bridge of Sighs"
project agora (Kara Davis)
"A Softened Law"
"and one Tuesday afternoon..."

"Every dance by Weare that I've seen since she moved to New York eight years ago has stuck in my mind." -Deborah Jowitt, Village Voice

Riding high after a lauded debut at Jacob's Pillow, New York darling Kate Weare's "Bridge of Sighs" drives upstream towards love in a wry and tender investigation of partnership and loneliness. Set to an original score by One Ring Zero, this "ruckus of dancing" (Village Voice) makes this time-tested topic, love, seem fresh as ever.

Would we still pray if we had peace? The world premiere of "A Softened Law" moves through Middle Eastern cultures of faith, exploring the way one's notion of God is formed by our surrounding conditions. Also on the bill, "one Tuesday afternoon," an exploration of the chain reactions created by a single relationship

Valley Concert Chorale to Perform Annual Holiday Concerts

Dec. 12 8pm Livermore and Dec. 13 3pm Pleasanton

MORE INFO: http://www.valleyconcertchorale.org/

The Valley Concert Chorale, the Tri-Valley's premier chorus, will perform their annual holiday concerts, which includes the ever-popular audience sing-a-long of traditional carols. Two concerts on Sat., Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 4th and L Streets, Livermore; and Sun., Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1225 Hopyard Road, Pleasanton.

This year's holiday concerts titled "Harmonious Holiday" features three musical selections representing a variety of music: Saint-Saens' Oratorio de Noel (Christmas Oratorio), Stephen Paulus' Christmas Dances, and Courtney's A Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas.

A highlight of the program is the West Coast premiere of Paulus' Christmas Dances, which was first performed in Arkansas last December.

"We are very excited to be premiering this new work by Stephen Paulus," says Doris Slater, the Chorale's president. "It's a wonderful piece to introduce to our audience that captures the spirit of the season."

"Paulus is one of the greatest living American choral composers," explains Bush. "Knowing his music, I was anxious to share this piece with the community. It combines voices with flute and harp in creating beautiful lush chords."

The Oratorio, written in the Romantic style in 1858, was commissioned by the Church of France for Christmas Eve mass. Accompanied by harp, organ and professional soloists, Bush describes it as a gentle, lyrical sacred piece that is not often performed yet is deserving of attention.

Courtney's version of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" comprises every genre of music from the earliest medieval chants to early 19th century American. "It's pure fun," says Bush. "You'll hear the words of "Twelve Days" set to familiar pieces representing every period of musical history."

Cabinets are the centerpiece of your kitchen and also one of its most expensive components. Installed properly, they are attractive and functional, almost like furniture. You can hang and trim cabinets for a fraction of the cost charged by an installer and get a result that's every bit as good, if you know what you're doing.

In this hands-on class you will learn:
* The tools and materials you'll need and how to use them
* How to plumb and level cabinets
* How to install upper and lower cabinets
* How to install islands and specialty cabinets
* How to trim out cabinets for a professional finish
* How to prepare cabinets for countertops

All DIY Academy classes are hands-on seminars. You'll learn what to do, then actually practice doing it.

Following last year's highly successful conference, invite you to join us at the 4th annual conference on the Business of New Media. This year's theme is 'Where is the Money?' - what new media companies are making money, what's coming up that you'll want to bet on? Blogs, podcasting, Internet radio and TV, social networking, and portable media-all are examples of new media forcing old media to change, adapt, and evolve or perish. We'll examine new payment systems and applications, business models and metrics to measure success, real-time information providers, cool companies in the new media space - and more.

Members of San Francisco's Jewelry Artisans Collective will debut their group exhibit, "Green and Gold: Adorn Responsibly," at the Live Worms Gallery December 11 through the 13th. The show's concept was originally intended to address the impact of the mining industry, but has evolved to reflect personal themes as well.

On the surface, it is a reference to the artists and their medium. Founded in 2007 by alumni of San Francisco's Revere Academy of the Jewelry Arts, many collective members are students and recent grads - "green" to the industry, working in gold and other precious metals.

On a broader level, it speaks to social and environmental responsibility and the value of personal relationships.

"The public is very aware of the environmental destruction and human rights abuses associated with mining," observes group spokesperson Jenny Reeves. "I'd estimate that 75% of the clients I meet ask about recycled metals, and a third of those want to buy recycled items exclusively. Fortunately, many of our suppliers now offer sustainable and reclaimed products - our whole group is making the conversion to these materials."

"To bring it full circle," she continues, "we're donating 10% of our sales to San Francisco Baykeeper - they've led the charge to clean up mercury in the Bay, much of which is a direct result of gold mining."

The "Green and Gold" theme also reflects the economy: implying the lack of "green" resulting from the financial melt-down, and suggesting what is truly "golden" - the friends and family that help us get through the hard times.

"One of the greatest benefits of being a collective member is the sense of community - that's been invaluable in coping with this recession," Reeves notes. "Even when money's tight, you want to say 'thank you' to the people who've been there for you - it just becomes more important to find gifts that have personal meaning and inherent, lasting value... Handmade jewelry is all of those things."

				Pacific Chamber Symphony presents:

Handel's Messiah

Tuesday, December 8, 8:00pm-10:00pm, Livermore

MORE INFO: http://www.pacificchambersymphony.org/

The Bankhead Theatre will once again resound with the greatest of all holiday treats. The Pacific Chamber Symphony will excite us again with a special performance of Handel's Messiah. The concert will feature a chorus made up of outstanding local soloists and chorus members.

Handel's Messiah is one of the monumental works in all of musical literature. It is probably the most widely performed religious work in the world. It was an instant success when it was first performed in 1742. It was written in just 24 days.

In 1741, Handel was broke, tired, and discouraged. Two unrelated events converged to change all that. First, Handel's wealthy friend, Charles Jensen, gave Handel a libretto that he had written based on the bible and the book of common prayer, and asked him to provide a musical setting. Second, Handel received a commission from a Dublin charity to compose a work for a benefit performance. Handel combined these two commissions, and the result was The Messiah.

On August 22, he started work on the piece, never leaving his house, and barely pausing to eat or sleep. A little over three weeks later, one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of music was complete.

The work was first performed at a charitable event in Dublin on April 13, 1742, with Handel himself conducting from the keyboard. It was an immediate success. It raised 400 pounds and freed 142 men from debtor's prison.

Today, The Messiah is often performed in large halls, with a large chorus and a large orchestra. The original chorus and orchestra, although large by contemporary standards, were of more moderate size. The Pacific Chamber Symphony's interpretation adheres more closely to the earlier performances, and contains many elements from the original Dublin presentation. This approach allows for more subtlety and attention to detail.

In any version, however, The Messiah is an inspired and inspiring work of art that rarely fails to elicit reverence and joy.

Ants may be tiny, but they play a huge role in their ecosystems. In fact, biologists estimate that the collective weight of all the ants on Earth is equal to the weight of all humans.

In this talk, Dr. Brian Fisher describes the unique behaviors and incredible adaptations of our planet's most charismatic small animals. See how ants farm, hunt and tend "herds of livestock". Learn how primitive Dracula ants feed on their sisters' blood.

Watch the fastest recorded movement of any animal -- a feisty ant with lightening-quick jaws that Dr. Fisher filmed with one of the world's most advanced high-speed cameras. You'll also learn about Dr. Fisher's conservation efforts in Madagascar and gain new respect for our smallest neighbors.

ATC Lecture: David Harrington, Sonic Immersion

Monday, December 7, 7:30pm-9:00pm, Berkeley

MORE INFO: http://atc.berkeley.edu

Through more than three decades of work with the Kronos Quartet, David Harrington has had a major impact on contemporary music. Kronos commissions works from composers who re-envision what a string quartet is able to do, develops concert experiences that expand the definition of what a string quartet performance can be, and assembles recording projects that challenge established ideas of how a string quartet can sound. For this ATC lecture, Harrington will play a diverse selection of recordings drawn from his extensive recording collection amassed over three decades, followed by a discussion with Professor David Wessel of the Center for New Music and Audio Technology.

David Harrington is the Artistic Director and founder of San Francisco's Kronos Quartet, which for more than 35 years has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to expanding the range and context of the string quartet. In the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential ensembles of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 45 recordings, and commissioning more than 650 new works and arrangements for string quartet. Integral to Kronos' work is a series of long-running, in- depth collaborations with many of the world's foremost composers, including Americans Terry Riley, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich; Azerbaijan's Franghiz Ali-Zadeh; Poland's Henryk Gorecki, and Argentina's Osvaldo Golijov. Additional collaborators have included Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man; the legendary Bollywood "playback singer" Asha Bhosle; the renowned American soprano Dawn Upshaw; Mexican rockers Cafe Tacuba; the Romanian gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks; and Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq. Kronos' work has garnered many awards, including a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance (2004) and "Musicians of the Year" (2003) from Musical America.

Sing-It-Yourself Messiah: Valley Concert Chorale's Fourth Annual Event

Sunday, December 6, 7:00pm-9:00pm, Pleasanton

MORE INFO: http://www.valleyconcertchorale.org/

Valley Concert Chorale, the Tri-Valley's premier chorus, will host its fourth annual Sing-It-Yourself Messiah on Sunday, December 6, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1225 Hopyard Road, Pleasanton.

The community is invited to join in singing Part I of Handel's great choral masterpiece, also known as the Christmas portion of Messiah, which will conclude with a powerful rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus.

"This is the fourth year we are hosting the event for the community, which has quickly become a holiday tradition for the region," says Valley Concert Chorale President Doris Slater. "Last year's event was a big success, drawing over 100 singers from around the Tri-Valley and beyond. It's great being able to offer this musical experience to the area, complete with professional soloists and accompaniment by our internationally-known concert pianist Daniel Glover."

Singers are encouraged to bring their own copy of Messiah, though extra copies will be available to borrow. The event is also open to those who wish to listen to the performance.

Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. Advance tickets may be ordered by calling (925) 866-4003, or by email to info@valleyconcertchorale.org. Students 18 and under are free if accompanied by a paying adult.

SDForum Security Event: Are Clouds Secure? Security & Privacy

Monday, December 7, 6:30pm-9:00pm, Mountain View

MORE INFO: http://www.sdforum.org/SecuritySIG

Topic: Are clouds secure? security, privacy and compliance in clouds

Cloud computing has emerged as a popular way for corporations to save money that would otherwise go into their IT infrastructure. However, along with the promise of cloud computing there has also been considerable skepticism about the type and extent of security and privacy that these services provide.

This session will address issues that affect any organization preparing to use cloud computing as an option. The authors of Cloud Security and Privacy address the security challenges, the steps you need to take to ensure your web applications are secure and your data is safe, and regulatory issues such as audit and compliance. With few details about such concerns provided to date, the obvious question to information security practitioners is, "what do those concerns really mean to organizations?" This talk will review the SPI delivery model (software-as-a-service - SaaS, platform-as-a-service - PaaS, and infrastructure-as-a-service - IaaS) and methodically explore security, privacy and compliance in public clouds offerings:

The speakers will also discuss privacy, audit, and compliance implications of the security provided by public clouds. Additionally, we will discuss security-as-a-service - that is, security delivered as a service through the cloud (as opposed to the security of other services (i.e., SaaS, PaaS, and IaaS) provided by cloud service providers).

Speaker: Subra Kumaraswamy CISSP, has more than 18 years of engineering and management experience encompassing Information Security, Internet and Ecommerce Technologies. He is currently leading a Security Access Mgmt program in the IT Security office at Sun. Subra's past roles include IT Architect, Software Engineer, Security Consultant at Accenture, Netscape, Lycos and Sun.

"Welcome to the New World", Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia

Mr. Wales discusses the history and impact of Wikipedia globally, as well as current trends on the Internet and his work at Wikia.

Jimmy Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur best known for founding the Wikimedia Foundation, the charity which operates Wikipedia.org, and the company Wikia, Inc., which operates Wikia.com.

Wales received his Bachelor's degree in finance from Auburn University and his Master's in finance from University of Alabama. He was appointed a fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School in 2005 and in 2006, he joined the Board of Directors of the non-profit organization Creative Commons.

In January of 2001, Wales started Wikipedia.org, the online encyclopedia that anyone can edit and today Wikipedia and its sister projects are among the top-five most visited sites on the web (comScore, January 2009). In mid-2003, Wales set up the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization to support Wikipedia.org. The Foundation, now based in downtown San Francisco, has a staff of close to thirty focusing on fundraising, technology, and programming relating to the expansion of Wikipedia. Wales now sits on the board of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation, and as founder continues to act as a key spokesperson.

In 2004, Wales co-founded Wikia, Inc., a for-profit company that enables groups of people to share information and opinions that fall outside the scope of an encyclopedia.

In 2007, The World Economic Forum recognized Wales as one of the "Young Global Leaders." In addition, Wales received the "Time 100 Award" in 2006, as he was named one of the world's most influential people in the "Scientists & Thinkers" category.

We'll demystify the process of hanging new doors and replacing existing doors. In the process you'll learn how to use the right tools, and the tricks that Finish carpenters use.

In this class you will learn:
* What tools you'll need, and how to use them
* How to remove old doors and frames
* How to install new doors, even by yourself
* How to "match and replace" door in the existing frames
* How to replace or install new door knobs
* Tricks of the trade that will make your job look professional

SF Choral Artists: Old Chestnuts, New Fire!

Saturday, December 5, 8:00pm-10:00pm, Palo Alto

"...amongst the foremost unaccompanied singing groups... on this or any other coast." -- R. Dane Danubian, artssf.com

"The Choral Artists sang with fervor, discernment, and tonal beauty"
-- Anna Carol Dudley, San Francisco Classical Voice

The California Institute of Integral Studies presents "Opening the Essay: A Workshop and Reading for Artists and Others" with poet, Jane Hirshfield.

About the Workshop: This brief workshop will explore essay writing as a tool of opening: a way to expand investigation, discovery, and understanding for those who may not ordinarily or primarily write in this form. The essay form has its roots in a word meaning "try," "trial," "test," and "weighing"; it is a way to sketch and stretch through into new and deepened realms. We'll look at how essays think, how to choose a subject, and the many possibilities inherent in the form.

Participants should bring paper, pen, and a first sentence and title from an essay (by someone else) that they admire.

Following the workshop, Jane Hirshfield will read from her work, beginning at 7pm.

Jane Hirshfield's work appears in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Orion, and five editions of The Best American Poetry, is the author of six prize-winning poetry collections, including After and Given Sugar, Given Salt, as well as a now classic book of essays, Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry. She has also edited and cotranslated several anthologies including Women in Praise of the Sacred: Forty-three Centuries of Spiritual Poetry by Women. In 2004 the Academy of American Poets honored her with the 70th Academy Fellowship for distinguished poetic achievement.
