Bay area Photographer Michael Johnson moves about Cuba capturing the lives of its people, the crumbling Spanish architecture and the remaining 1950s American cars. With each photograph the splendor of what is and once was comes into focus and it becomes evident that Cuba continues to thrive within the eyes, hearts and minds of the people who live there today.

Michael Johnson was born in Harlem, New York City and heard his calling to the fine arts as a youth. However, his odyssey as a visual artist did not begin until his late twenties when his father gave him three hundred and fifty dollars to buy his first camera. Shortly afterward he moved to Martha's Vineyard Island where he taught himself the art of photography.

He endeavors to keep the traditional techniques of hand crafted black and white photography alive with his work. Michael says of his creative process: "All of my work is informed by my deep belief in God. I try to tell the truth with my images, but it must be told from the viewpoint of dignity and beauty. Whether it is nature, architecture, or people, God creates the forms and the moments and I draw on my talent and spirit to capture them. My job is infinitely simple, but infinitely rewarding."

The Joyce Gordon Gallery, located in Oakland, one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States, is dedicated to representing and exhibiting inspirational and gifted artists who challenge us all to grow, think, and be free. The Photography Gallery was established by Joyce Gordon to meet the growing demand for collectable photographs, and to provide a forum for sharing socially and artistically engaging fine art photography.

The gallery's annual program consists of exhibitions, artist discussion and photography classes for adults and children to promote discussion and understanding of photography.
