BERZERKELEY POETRY SLAM -Every Wednesday.
*2007 West Coast Champions * Best of the E.Bay*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
----THIS WEEK: SEMIFINALS #2! Hot Pizza, Irish Beer & Mayhem! Three Blind Mice deliver live Jazz, Joshua Walters emcees.
----SEMIFINALS #2: After 7 months of competition, hundreds of hopeful poets, thousands in prizes, only the top 16 poets advance to Semi's. We rank them by points earned, then split them into two groups of 8 poets. And what an incredible group of poets we have this year! Hungry newbies, Darkhorse assassins, fearless veterans. I have to say, this is the biggest and most promising crop of newbie talent we've had since the 98-99 season!
---This is the night that has everyone guessing; filled with hot but unproven newbies and two overlooked veterans who’re looking to earn some respect. Will charisma trump guile? Not to name any names, but some fans are evensaying one of the newcomers has what it takes to be a national champion! Which is to say this ought to be a spectacular fight. And folks, make no mistake, Berkeley is THE team to make this year in NorCal. Here they are, alphabetically:
----Abe: a veteran of two Collegiate teams, his confessional work is delivered with the emotional intensity of heart attack.
----Baraka: one of our top-ranked poets, a charismatic spinner of cosmic rhymes who has helped coalesce the Bay Area's hot newbies into the potent force now dominating many slams.
----Dre: fearless competitor who brings the same no-holds-barred attitude to his hiphop-flavored rants against injustice.
----Charles "Ekabhumi" Ellik: long-time slam emcee and coach of the team who has never made his own
team. His biggest strength is a deep well of poems to choose from.
----Jennifer G: Her precise writing slides inside your mind like a well-honed knife, dissecting the everyday into jagged shards that glitter like gemstones.
----Joyce Lee: Powerhouse presence on the stage who tells it like it is, yet makes the hard truth of love gone wrong funny as a sitcom.
----Andrew Lowe: Veteran poet and coach of several teams (including Berkeley), he addresses social issues with the fervor of a preacher.
----Dusty Rose: When everyone else is shouting, she's crooning hypnotic concoctions that may heal or harm but you never know till it's too late because both go down so smooth.
----Semi's are fundraisers for the team; $10 door or mention the UPDATE and get in for $8!!!
----LAST WEEK: It was a fantastic competition, full house (120+), & an upbeat vibe. Kudos to Christian for getting high score of Round 1 despite drawing the "A" spot. To Jason Bayani for making a HUGE comeback in R2. Props to the poet "I", who won it after having only slammed for six months! And to Matt Blesse, though a veteran of the UC Berkeley collegiate slam team, he has also been slamming for less than six months.
